Is there a persimmon tree that can grow inground in zone 5b? I bought a persimmon fruit at the store to try it and it was amazing. Although it was not fully ripe I loved it and can only imagine what a ripe one would taste like.

They are incredible. You are looking for an American Persimmon. Yates, Meader, Prok.

What low temperatures have you experienced?

In zone 5b you are fine growing American Persimmons and the hybrid persimmons (Nikita's Gift, Rosseyanka, Kassandra, JT02). American and hybrid persimmons are all astringent until ripe.

England's sells a few Kaki varieties (notably Chinebuli which is non-astringent) which survived and produced after -15F for them in KY. From my reading 0F is where it gets hard for many Kaki varieties to survive.

If you are willing to protect in the winter, you can grow other varieties but it's probably tougher than protecting figs!
