  • Beginner Blueberry Plant suggestions

I want to grow some Blueberry's in addition to my fig trees. What are some varieties that I should start with? I want to keep it potted.

Blueberry cultivars flower and ripen at different times in the year, http://www.fallcreeknursery.com/asse...art_poster.pdf . The recommendation is to have 2 different cultivars (that flower at the same time) for cross pollination and increased harvests, though its not absolutely necessary. In my location BlueCrop, Northland and Patriot have been consistent producers in ground but can be container grown.

I'm also growing O'Neal, Misty, Tophat, Chandler and Elliot in pots. This will be my 3rd year with O'Neal and Misty, they're surprisingly productive and hardy, but are zoned for warmer locations. They were originally purchased from Lowes in Chester NY. All were severely damaged by rodents (Voles) this past winter and had to be cut back, but are wintered outdoors without any protection. Good Luck.

The Lowes in Chester is very close to me so I'll try them tomorrow. I'll also pick up some Peat Moss (acidic) and some soil for a potting mixture. Should I also buy Epsoma Soil Acidifier? If Lowe's doesn't have any plants I'll try Adams Fairacre Farm in Newburgh.

There are several potting mix recipes on-line and on this forum, http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/blueber...erries-in-pots . I use the Espoma Soil Acidifier but to keep the soil acidic I follow Wills' and Gina's advice on acidifying the water. Napa Auto Parts sells Sulfuric Acid (battery acid) 6 qt. costs $17.00 and very little is needed, http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/blueber...-from-a-newbie . Adams Fairacre Farms sells the "Correct" Pine Bark Mulch in 2 Cu Ft Bags @ $4.00, at the Newburgh store its stacked to the right of the gates from the parking lot to the Outdoor Garden. Agway's Pine Bark Mulch is the brand that I use in all my custom potting mixes including the blueberry potting mix, but the Adams is the same size and consistency (99% Bark).

A simple pH test kit, http://generalhydroponics.com/site/i...s/ph_test_kit/ can be purchased from The Grow Room in Nyack, http://www.thegrowroom.com/ or online.

FYI 6 quarts is a lot of acid... depending on how many plants you have. They also sell a 1 quart at Advanced Auto and probably other places, maybe even Walmart. For my tap water, I only need 5 drops in 1.5 gallons, so 1 quart will last me many years for my 7 bushes. Your water could be very different though, it depends on the alkalinity of the water, so be sure to test the pH and add the acid dropwise.

        Phil,
My Napa has the 1 qt size for $13.00 and the 6 qt. for $17.00.
I'm in complete agreement that very little is needed which is why I purposely linked the newbie Topic and the pH test kit.
Its possible it may not even be necessary but there was a marked visible difference in the before and after acid treatment.

I went for the 55 gallon barrel size of the 96% acid

I also went for the 6 qrt size. Just much more cost effective. I have 50-60 plants, mostly in 15 gallon containers. The larger 'box' (with bladder inside) will last me about 4-5 years or so. If you can water at times with rain, a box will last even longer.

AscPete as always thanks for the links.. I'm in research more now.. Lowes has some nice plants. I didn't buy any yet but my wife decided to buy a plant on her own. Its in bad shape but for 9$ I'll rehab it.
