  • When to prume

When is the best time to prune overgrown mature blueberry bushes, after harvest or wait until winter?

That depends on where you live. I live in a warm area with a long growing season and early harvest, so for me, pruning is right after harvest. And occasionally a branch here or there at any time.

I am on the 8b/9a line in Louisiana about 50% of the time our first freeze of the year is after Jan 1st, but some years it is as early as late October

When do your berries typically bloom and ripen?

We had a very mild winter and early spring here, so the first of them should be getting ripe in the next 2-3 weeks, some are just starting to show a hint of pink), In an average year I would say 1st of June give or take.

I'm only guessing, but I would think you could start taking out some obvious branches/old canes right after your harvest. And perhaps a second pass in your winter.

Hopefully someone with experience in an area such as yours will have some more informed suggestions.
