Obviously in ground makes a difference here in Phx...mine are in pots and my figs aren't nearly as nice as yours. As I hope to relocate, I just don't want to plant in ground...unfortunately.Pm me for the list of trees available for sale.

figs and tropicals - Its really hard to say if in ground vs container makes a difference here in Phoenix without a controlled experiment. But the synergy between soil microbiology and soil chemistry do play a huge part in producing an excellent fig, along with other such variables as plant genetics, rainfall, climate, elevation & sunshine. If everything is right you get exceptional fruits and vegetables such as Kona coffee, Vidalia onions, Pima cotton and Napa valley wine grapes. With that being said, it is possible to grow exceptional figs in containers, as many people here do.
You might want to try some mycorrhizae inoculant in your container figs. They say if the fig roots become colonized with it, it makes it easier for the fig to uptake key minerals and trace nutrients. I saturated the whole area where my figs grow when I planted them, because its a mix of horrible caliche and construction subsoil.
