  • Fantastic Four: Black Madeira - Violeta - Madeira Island Black - Craven's Craving

Yes, Black Madeira - Violeta - Madeira Island Black - Craven's Craving, but not at the same time.
I hope I will be able to taste them side by side soon.

    In my personal observation:
    • Productivity: 4 of them are very productive
    • Split: CC, MIB, and Violeta are less split than my BM.
    • Taste: up to now, CC and MIB are my favorite.
I’m still looking to add Figo Preto, Black Tuscan, Black Portuguese and Mario’s #50 to my collection of Black Madeira family members.

JLB thank you for your kind words!
Yes, I could say in my place the climate is quite typical, I live in the North part, we have the long growing season, not much rain, not much humidity, hot summer. Basically we could grow almost fig varieties here, except San Pedro and Smyrna types, because we also do not have fig wasp here. For some “easy to split” varieties like Black Madeira, we also need to take much care to get the ripe figs, because even with low humidity, it still tends to split.

@doubleblue : Leaf №1 (black Madeira) is formed at high humidity and the typical shape of the variety does not stand out. All other leaves have a shape similar to or completely identical to the leaves of the variety Brogiotto Nero (Violette de Solliès).

cybercop thank you for your comment!
I got the cutting from the seller that had his tree growing from Harvey’s cutting. About picture #1, actually my Black Madeira has both single lobed leaf and three lobed leaf pattern, but at the time I picked that ripe fig last October, that single lobed leaf was the only leaf shape that I could picked. If you want, I will post more photos of Black Madeira leaf when I’m back home. We have the long growing season here, not much rain, not much humidity, and there is no humidity on October.

About other leaves, I myself have been growing Brogioto Nero (Brogioto Fiorentino) and Violette de Solliès, but they are still very young trees. I will take note to compare their leaves and fruits with Black Madeira family figs in the future. As far as I read and researched, Brogioto Nero (Brogioto Fiorentino) and Violette de Solliès are not listed in Black Madeira family figs.

          Thank you for your advice!
Figo Preto is on my wish list, because I want to collect the "Madeira Trinity" introduced by SueV in the past, they are Figo Preto, Figo Branco and Abebereira.
          Take care!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I took a vacation from all the social media for a couple of years, but
I’m dipping my toes into the water by getting back on here.
