  • First ever ripe breba - DK

Does this community need another post by a PNW-er extolling the virtues of Desert King? Probably not. Oh well!

Picked my first ever ripe Desert King breba today and it was SWEET. I’ve had decent panache main crop from the grocery store before and these were easily half again sweeter, with a rich honey flavor that maybe just slightly whispered of strawberry, and zero acidity.

Two more on the tree (I got it as a 2-gal whip from OneGreenWorld last August and it’s in a 5-gal pot now) to enjoy and then I’ll probably try and graft it to my one in ground VBT that I intend to make into a frankenfig.

            🤘🤘🤘

edit: I had a couple tonight that were ready. This one I’ve been holding off picking until it was hanging straight down and starting to shrivel. Not sure why mine are so yellow, but this is the first year it’s ripened any, and the tree is getting too tall. I’ll have to cut it back a bit and hope it’ll produce enough wood before the end of the season to get breba next year.

And no, the dog didn’t get any. He’s just really inquisitive.

No. He’s a mutt. We think part lab, either king or german shepherd, and pit.

He looks very similar to a Thai dog, especially the face. That's pretty cool.

ID:	1023566 Never get tired of hearing someone's enthusiasm for a variety. It looks great. I actually got a surprise breba DK but even though it had started to really look ripe, I guess it wasn't, but I've got one more to try, hopefully.

SeattleFigs heres a typical leaf and the size of some of the breba I’ve gotten. Severe FMV on certain branches. Other breba were of typical size. My tree was one of the first I bought. I got it at U&D nursery in Albany. The leaves this year seem to be a different shape than in past years. Even on the tree some more closely resemble typical DK leaves. I guess I’ll leave the main crop on and see what happens. Maybe it’s something different. I’ve got confirmed DK starts from other sources, so not worried about that.

Huh. Never heard of it. I guess it’s possible. The place I got it from is a pretty good sized operation with lots of variety. I really don’t know what else this tree may be. I hadn’t even given it a second thought.

Just to be sure I went up to the church and checked out their tree last night. Mine is definitely something different. The church tree is 1000% DK….and also loaded with nobody picking. I couldn’t help myself. It doesn’t get much better than this.

A number of Seattle growers had a get together yesterday to share brebas and do a taste test. I won’t go into huge detail because I think there are other members that will do the event justice, BUT:

DK was the hands down favorite. Overall, more growers had DK breba in their top 3 than white madeira, i258, and VdB!
