  • Black Madeira identity?

Could any of you confirm this is a Black Madeira? I’m searching online some have this leaf pattern as some have spaded leaf pattern. Could anyone show me your leaf pattern. Got this cutting from eBay last year, at one point last season it was growing spaded leafs but this year I haven’t seen any.

Without ripe fig, it is too soon to tell, but in my opinion, this leaf pattern is quite unusual for Black Madeira leaf

🤔 I don’t think mine is a bm. Damn!! This whole time I was thinking it was. Hopefully its at least an early variety.

np, If yours turns out not to be BM...I hope it is at least a great tasty variety.

        Happy Growing!

Here’s the thing about leaf pattern: it can be affected by climate and vigor. My BM types typically exhibit 5 lobed leaves like yours or 3 lobed leaves. My trees are also quite vigorous because of my good fertilizer and almost perfect climate. I-258 is another example. My tree last year had mainly 5 lobed leaves, while a Canadian member had a tree with almost entirely fat tri-lobed leaves . Both trees have been fruited. I can probably take some pictures for you later

that being said, you won’t truly know until you have ripe fruits and a mature tree

Ktrain it is very interesting how much patterns can differ from tree to tree. As if identifying figs wasn’t difficult enough ! Lol

Oh I see, my tree did get some set back from the cold back in June then it stalled for a good month. It’s just started coming back. Maybe the weather might have changed it’s pattern.

Yep....you almost have to wait for a ripe num num, def. give you a better answer.

Hope it is and you didn’t waist the time, the money people pay for cuttings is bad enough but to find out you waisted your time growing the wrong fig is even worse.

This was a photo back in May when it started leafing out. All those leaves had fallen due to the weather change from the greenhouse and outside.

Interesting thanks Ktrain I’m gonna have to wait till next season. I don’t think I’m gonna give it an early start next year. It stalled this tree for a very long time.

I would say that's not a Black Madeira fig.

Black Madeira figs have distinctive features and the neck is one of them.

Sometimes the three lobed leaves have the thumbs but the fruit should have a neck. Here is some fruit pics from three different trees

It was a small figlet, would it still show the neck the same way in a small figlet.

Never paid that much attention but that fig in the picture should have the neck.

Here’s some pics of my Violeta figs and it’s typical leaf patterns. Violeta is allegedly the original name and strain of Black Madeira, acquiring new names as it traveled with Portuguese immigrants. It hasn’t been 100% proven scientifically, so you should take that into consideration when reading my post. But they’re very close figs, most likely the same so I thought it might help to share with you
