  • First Fig Harvest 2021 - 5 Varieties

Yesterday I harvested a few fruits from multiple varieties: Pastiliere, Unknown Pastiliere, Socorro Black, Desert King and Lampa Branca.

I tasted all (of course everyone's palate is different) and here is what I found:

Pastiliere/Unknown Pastiliere: I believe I picked them still a bit early as their taste was moderately sweet and bit dry to my taste. I had some fruits from both trees last year, so I think I will have better tasting fruits towards the end of the year.

Socorro Black: Moderately sweet, somewhat earthy(?) and more berry flavor than Pastiliere.

Desert King: This variety is usually underrated/overlooked given it is commercially available, no one actually really cares about it. What a mistake! Very tasty, super sweet, I would say the sweetest of all the 5 varieties I tasted.

Lampa Branca: This is definitely my favorite of the 5. Medium-large fruits, moderately sweet, but very syrupy! I planted this tree in soil this year, and there were many others I wanted to plant, but ended up choosing this one. No regrets!

All are main crop for sure. In my area there are fig wasps so I would assume it is caprified too.

I had a Lampa Branca and it had a very unique taste that I can’t pinpoint. The one I had was probably caprified as well.

Let me wait a bit and get a better ripe fruit for all so I can make a more fair rating.

MAN those look very nice ,try letting them ripen more ,should not have any white sap on stem when picked .the flavor and sugars develope a huge amount if alowed to hang longer another day or two ,look for drouping fruit ,wrinkles, crakes softer . good luck , .

Agree! They all look like they could have used at least a few more days before picking.

unfortunatly birds and criters also recognise fully ripe figs ,so some defense is often neccasary to buy the time to taste ambrosia !

Thanks everyone. All those trees are in ground, so hoping for more and better ripe fruits later on. I will try to take higher quality photos with better lighting and color accuracy too.

                        Damn good ...not a newbie
Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
