  • Air layer shed its leaves

Greetings fig experts. This is my first air layer; it’s been on for about 1.5 months when it shed its leaves a few days ago. Seems to still have some water left- I had it wrapped in a bag, Saran Wrap, and foil. Anyone know why it did this? I’ve made sure the tree has had plenty of water. Should I go ahead and cut it and pot it?

Haha, I don’t know. It’s my first air layer and I’ve seen other peoples’ with lots more roots so I didn’t want to cut too soon.

Looks like plenty of roots to me. Just be careful not to damage them when you pot it. Assuming a good transfer, you should see buds popping in a few weeks.

Agree with Joe. I’ve cut plenty of ALs with fewer roots than that.

I mistakenly took a couple at 3 weeks and they are doing very well. I had planned on 4. But 6 weeks is torture.

Air layering, is going to be my next project. I just need a month or two to get my I 258, big enough. I planted it on July 2nd. New growth and figlets starting to form.

Those are some healthy roots. I like to pot mine up and then let it rest in the shade for a few days.

I did a cup style air-layer last year and it worked fine. Then I tried zip-lock bag air-layers and they are doing nothing. Never again.
