  • Beltrana 2021

Finally!!! I have had this tree for 3 seasons now and it is finally ripening properly. Almost all the precious ones looked good but had a massive void and were not filled out. They all had amazing color and the taste was still great but I was disappointed at them and thought it might not worn here. Well, today was the day!!

I picked 10 figs today and more than half were perfect. Intensely dark red / burgundy interior that is super complex and slightly acrid. I can’t really describe the flavor bc my tastebuds are overloaded from a day of figs. I’ll evaluate one later. That said, it was excellent.

Literally gasped when I got down to the pictures. Gorgeous color! This one is at the top of my list for Harvey’s sale.

Very nice looking figs, looks like another keeper! Too bad I missed this one at Harvey's auction. First 2 hours could not even log in, so missed some good ones. Will put this on this years list, thanks!

Looking excellent! How has this been compared to Planera for you?

Very different. Planera is the most dense fig I have and possibly the most complex. It is like fruit punch on steroids. :-)

I love Planera! big unusual flavored and textured figs. Mine are mostly green with a purple blush on the ones getting the most light. Different and reliable enough from my killer Etnas to keep, I rooted only a few new varieties this year. Beltrana was one of them. Green figs with red interiors rock.

Evdurtschi Hope you don’t mind me adding a couple fig photos of my own. Not sure if this has been discussed in prior threads but I’m wondering if the purpleish hue we see in several varieties is a sign of caprification? I had a couple Beltrana earlier in the season and while still quite good, never possessed this purple hue. As you said, this fig is spectacular and also quite large.

Evdurtschi this would be an interesting characteristic to track, if possible. Average high for the month in our climate has been ~81 degrees with an average night time low of ~68 degrees, which I believe is ~10 degrees warmer on both spectrums compared to Santa Barbara.
