Fig of the day.... Smith!

Oh baby, I've been waiting for this. Since I started growing Smith it's always been a fig here and a fig there. It was really nice to come home to five superb specimens this evening. Smith has a skin on the heavier side. The jam is outstanding but for me the best quality is this velvety sweetness that seems to stick to the tongue and linger for a very long time. There's not another fig I can think of that does this. It's like a figgy coating.

Figs were actually a big part of dinner tonight. Some fresh bread... from the garden tomatoes, Tropea onions and peppers..... And a big plate of these

Sounds like a great dinner to me!

I am not there yet with the fruit (or figs). However, I am there with the veggies!

My counter top is buried in ripe tomatoes. Being able to eat a pile of them every day is a real treat. I cannot wait to be able to do this with figs as well.

Getting the fall veggies garden going right now as well. Succession planting of broccoli and cabbage.... and lots of kale and collards that should last till late next Spring/Early Summer.

I cannot wait to get my figs into the ground late next Spring!

Also some fresh pesto made from Genovese basil and Piave Vecchio formaggio rounds things off nicely!

This time in the season meals can get a bit less orchestrated. One eats what is ripe as much as possible. The food is perfect! We're into the the days where everything is garden to table. Best time of year for eating. Yum!

It's looking like dinner tomorrow will involve Shepherd Pepper, Tomato, Tropea onion, Basil.... Cucumber seems to have run its course for the season...
