  • Unk Pastiliere Intensity and sweetness

Earlier in the season, UP was not sweet enough for the wow. We had better figs. With less water and hotter days, it lived to its reputation. It is intense berry with sweetness to balance to make it standout among many we have.

Today it was 90+F and for the first time I see honey coming out from the eye. So far it is the only fig my wife asked what is the name again and why it "Unknown" !

It is sort of a finicky fig in my yard. Somehow tends to spoil near the ripening window. I’m not sure if it is ants, over-pollination or water deficit. It is very productive and no problem with caprification (so no drops) but only had a few good ones among so many.

Most of mine spoiled this year also, I believe that happens when the wasps carry Endosepsis along with the pollen. It's a matter of luck, another grower I know who is only 7 miles away has no spoilage this year, he's getting the clean wasps :-)

Thanks. This is a possibility. I think most of the wasps in my yard originate from a nearby caprifig. Not sure how I can treat the tree (which is tall) for endosepsis. I also wonder if some varieties are resistant to this fungus. Tia Penya ripened beautifully but most UP spoiled

Seems we need "clean" wasps, right watering, right hot days and right picking time to get those few high quality ones. It is a leeper but I wouldn't make more copies.

Just wanted to give an update and be fair to UP. After fixing watering frequency, tree stopped dropping fruits and it delivered top quality fruits. Rich and sweet. Hands down top fig and we have more than few "top tier"
