  • Calderona, Crozes and Red Lebanese Bekaa Valley

I picked three figs today as an experiment in predicting how ripe a fig is using tactile and visual stimulus.
This picture shows the three figs with my guesses.
I looked for wrinkles on the skin, color and softness to touch and make my predictions.

RLBV was a couple days early. I was impressed that the fig tasted as good as it did.
This is a wonderful variety and one of my favorites.
Light sweetness with a light berry flavor that was refreshing.
      No melon flavor at all.

Try to let it hang for six day after it starts changing color.

My Crozes has the appearance of an Etna. I was getting concerned but looks like fruit is almost in the ballpark. How is crozes when picked earlier, similar to RLbv in ripeness? Your RLbv is do nice & dark for being picked early. They all look great!!!!!

Next year i look forward to a Crozes & sangue dolce comparison! Calderona looks wishlist worthy ohman

I think Crozes is a Mt Etna.
Both Crozes and RLBV are must have figs in places with shorter seasons.
They both shine in the warm, dry climates.
I think both varieties are better if you let them dry on the tree.
They are both excellent if picked a couple of days early as well.

I might also mention that all three varieties had a hang time of six days.

No swelling on any BM types yet.
Tons of figs on FP, Mario #50 and BM Encanto.

Happy to see that even picked a bit early RLBV can be good. Sometimes circumstances force me to pick a day or two too early, so any that are still good at this stage are a plus.

Crozes is one I haven't looked at before, but apparently another of the dark, jammy Mt Etnas -- my favorite type. Others in this category include Norella, Malta Black, and Sao Miguel Roxo.

          Thanks for the report!

My season starts so late in Oregon. I really need the Mt. Etnas to get more figs. They are the perfect compliment for my season.

Last year I got a fully ripened RLBV and Malta Black on the same day and I thought at the time they were equally jammy, equally delicious, but like two different flavors of a berry jam.

I couldn’t say if one was “strawberry” or another was “raspberry” but both were just so good - I am really happy I have a new Sao Miguel Roxo in my collection if it’s on the same playing field as these are!

All three of those figs would be excellent. They are all on my list. I love to see what you have Netstars because my daughter lives in Eugene. (She's going to get my cuttings and air layers eventually).
