  • A little late season perfection

Italian-258 and Figo Preto. I've always love my Pretos , the 258 is new for me. It has a true berry taste, I really like it.

I258 was also new to me this season. The few fruit I tried were delicious. They had a strong berry taste and syrupy sweetness. It quickly became my favorite, even though it's still a first year tree.

Both beautiful figs, Rafael! Like the BM, they both look like they shout out "Decadent"; the kind of fig you want to close your eyes and slowly savor... Perhaps the forum should start a class of fig called "Indulgent Decadence"... a way to really set the best of the best of the best apart from the others....

I have an unheated GH so maybe I can try and add Preto this winter and they do wake up 4-6 weeks earlier than my inground figs.

Most of my new figs this year were early ripeners like MBVS, RDB, Florea, etc.

Those look tremendous, especially the Preto. The same with Art's Sollies fig recently posted. And others.

To Tony's point about a best fig class, they might all be late ripeners. That said, there are premier figs (at least in relative terms) really first-rate figs that distinguish themselves early, middle and late. Not only that but with cool nights and leaves already falling and the first ones being raked here in northern West Virginia, to pluck a ripe Mt Etna off a tree, in-ground or otherwise (my ones in embedded pots are bigger) seems to me to be something akin to plucking the holy grail. A bit of tropical splendor on the verge of tundra. It's a little thing, I guess, but it's an astonishing little thing.

These are two I want too. If you're getting fruit in zone 7 now, I should get a few here. I recently picked up one (coming tomorrow) from this flavor group that for sure will work here. JFE Black Madeira not. Sold as BM, but fruits much earlier, a Portuguese fig from Madeira but not BM. Just Fruits & Exotics sells few, doesn't list, extremely hard to propagate.
I also have another Portuguese fig, Craven's Craving, but it appears to ripen late. Not a good fit. Hoping it will ripen soon. It has 25 figs on an 18 inch plant, prolific! First leaf with 25 figs? Yes, amazing. I'll need a year before I can offer any of these. I owe some people too.

The Preto did not have a head start. The 258 did have a head start in the gh.

Thanks Rafael, OK, well that was is out now. I missed that somehow? Preto still there. I can start them early under lights, but in the spring my lights are busy with peppers, and tomatoes. I could bring them though in late fall, and will bring in Craven's Craving if it fails to ripen before frost.
They formed so early, I had high hopes! Here is CC.

Hmmmm.... JFE BM Not..... JF&E sells few, doesn't list..... Does this comment suggest that calling them and asking for what they have to sell that is NOT on the "a la carte" menu is a viable approach?

    Thanks,

Yes, it may result in a tree. I heard one guy say, the lady there would try for one person to clone. They have a tree. It will get around eventually if worthwhile. You never know about these things. I got mine from Bill who owns a nursery, he has one more going on Ebay. Not sure if he is a member here? Met him on f4f. My plant is not even here yet, tomorrow according to tracking.

Thanks for the feedback, Andrew... I have tried leaving emails / comments on some of the sites that forum members frequent asking about inclusion on mailing lists, advance notification of coming sales of certain varieties, etc. as sometimes a sale starts and gets sold out so quickly that unless you happen to be in the know or get a heads up, you miss out. So far, they haven't panned out but we shall see.... I may give the old phone call a try...
