Was losing more than half of my ripe figs to birds. Not just one type of bird but Blue jays, Cardinals and Robins. And they know when they are ripe. You watch a particular fig as it ripens and say just one more day and the next morning it's gone. Had to do something so I built this cage out of 1" PVC. Slide the 10' lengths of PVC over 1/2" rebar that I cut to 30" lengths and drove about 12" into the ground. Covered with a 25' x 50' piece of netting that had 1" openings. The front of the netting is weighed down with 2 lengths of the PVC so I just pick it up enter enter to do my picking. Seems to be doing the trick.

Good job Bill. I did the same thing but used 3/4" electrical conduit and a little different design. Mine is 20 by 55 feet and works great. It 's been up for 3 years and this winter I have to do repairs as the netting has worn through a a few spots from the wind moving it over the supports.

This is a good one, Bill. How's it going Gene? Everytime someone mentions a fig cage I think of yours.Last edited by quackmaster; 09-18-2016, 12:16 PM.

Hey Gene - do you have pics of your cage by any chance. I am planning one out for next year and would love to see what people have done before. Trying to decide on PVC vs Wood, i already have alot of EMT conduit i used for trellis - so wondering if i could reuse it (mind you its a pain to cut down). Thanks!!!

I like the fig cage.
Chipmunks stole my breba crop this Spring and now hornets and yellow jackets are eating them. I should do something like that. The neighbors already think I'm crazy to have so many trees then they'll say he really nuts for keepin them caged up.Wishlist; Green Michurinska, St. Rita
