  • Sport figs

Okay, please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't a lot of the fig varieties sports of another variety? So assuming you come up with a new (sport) how would you proceed? Can you patent it and sell it for a huge sum of money or just list them on e-bay until they are no longer considered rare. My thoughts are if you go the e-bay way you need to have a lot on hand to sell before other people start sharing their cuttings for free.

In theory you could, yes. If you can prove it is unique you can get a patent. Bayernfeige Violetta is a sport of EBT that is patented. An easier course of action could to be trademark a name and market it. An example is the Pink Lady apple. The actual cultivar is Cripp's Pink, but you can get more money under the trademarked name.

Not only that but when, in the future, someone asks you if you are active in "sports", you can answer in the affirmative.... :-)

The most famous "Sport" is Kadota, which came from a Dottato cultivar,

And became a successful commercial and widely grown cultivar.

With good media hype and a catchy name you may be able sell any standard cultivar to collectors.

One of my favorite things about figs is that they are so genetically mobile. Have a CDD Rimada in the greenhouse now that all it has is huge single mulberry leaves. Limb sport, came from a friend. So now just need to grow it out and make sure the mutation persists.

So the cuttings from this plant have to keep the mother plants mutations before you could market it.

        Tony,

Yeah but it is more fun earlier on as it is a lot easier to find the ones you want.

        King,

Yes. Then it could be remaned even, as it is significantly different from the parent but the name would have to come from the person who owns the mother tree that threw the sport, not me.

A genetic mutation that can be duplicated through propagation (cuttings).

There is probably a 50/50 chance that the variegation will remain. For some reason and I haven't a clue why but when the plant goes dormant sometimes the "sport" just goes poof and the next year it leafs out and is completely normal. Or especially with variegation sometimes it just reverts to normal and even forcing buds from leaves that were variegated don't produce the pretty leaves. I sure hope that is not the case with yours Dave and if it doesn't I WANT IT Maybe we can work out a trade like pink pony immunity for a year, or Hershell gets a pink pony for a year. I'm easy, and bribe freely.

Time will tell I tried to air layer the limb it wasn't quite brown yet I had the pot on it for almost 3 months and not one root as matter of fact there wasn't a bump on the limb so I will either wait until next year and do an air layer or cut the limb for cuttings I am not sure yet I did see one on a Melanesian fig site that was growing variegated like crazy we will see

As far as making a trade with you I have to talk to my partner in crime if he gives the green light your first on the list ........................
