  • Varieties that ripen Sept-Oct in zones 9 & 10

For these warm zones what favorite varieties have the bulk of the crop ripen at this time of the year? Do these figs just take longer from figlet formation to fully ripe? If so protection from pests for the extra time would seem to decrease the final yield to us two legged critters.

There is a tree in my neighborhood making green/yellow figs that look two weeks away from harvest. Very vigorous grower, not sure the variety but I'm interested in figs that ripen heavily after mid Sept as my current trees are done by end of Aug.

Here are some figs from my Zone 9B garden this morning. I had to edit the Figo Preto photo several times to get it small enough to up load because the tree is still covered with figs up the length of each limb, even after culling many. There were also 5 figs on my second year LSU Scott's Black and a whole new crop of figs emerging on LSU Purple, Strawberry Verte, and RdB that may not have time to ripen.
Left to right: Alma, Bronze Paradiso, Panache, I-258, Unk. Pastillere, Hative de Argentueil, and (finally) Figo Preto.

Your UP is looking close. Any idea when the wasp stops being active? I'm wondering if these late ripeners get pollinated.

The UP was very good even if a little diluted down from regular watering. We’re still having hot weather with temps in the 100s today predicted. I would worry more about it being too hot for the wasps than them going inactive. The heat doesn’t seem to slow down the fruit flies at all.

I'm glad you got to enjoy the UP Mara, I'm told it's top notch when pollinated. You're figs look great! All those half ripe ones would be half pecked out in my garden :-)

Pasquale is a good one though it may just miss the window you mentioned but sometimes has figs almost ripe in October but it is mostly November in to December. It is always my last.
Cutting sales will start Tuesday Nov 1 at 9:00 eastern

Fresh figs at Thanksgiving would be nice! But I'd need a force field to keep the critters away for that long. I wonder what Mr. Scott is doing these days :-)

These three finally ripened today: Kure Beach Unk. (big), Pane e Vino Dark (medium), and Dark Portuguese (small-split a little). There should have been a Figo Preto between the size of Pane e Vino and Kure, but a coon wrecked it when it couldn't get it out of the organza bag.
Pane e Vino dark was fruity, moderately sweet, with a slight off taste, perhaps soapy -hard to describe.
Dark Portuguese was sweeter, with a more intense acid taste to its fruitiness. Very good.
Kure Beach Unk. tasted just like Dark Portuguese but the DP flavor was diluted by half, sort of watery, with only a hint of fruity sweetness.
The FP would have beat the taste of all of them. It's my favorite of this years figs and I guess the coon's favorite too, since it left the other figs on the trees.

Thanks for the update Mara, maybe this weekends heat wave will work some magic on your FP's.
