  • Delicious unknown from Palo Alto - could use help ID'ing

Last month, I went out for an anniversary dinner in downtown Palo Alto. There was a giant fig tree in the common walkway right next to where we parked, and I couldn't help picking a few. They were gorgeous and delicious! Excellent sugar/acid balance. We took home a few cuttings and they all rooted, so now I have 3 growing in 1# pots.

Any idea what this could be?

Can't help with the ID, Sarah, but it's a nice looking fig. High praise for the flavor, coming from a fig connoisseur such as you.

Great Find, look delicious!!! The color looks like Vasile/Hermansur I-258 but the neck looks different. I traded my I-258 for an Ohra.

Are you confident it may have been planted? It looks awfully smyrna like.

It was just in the tree area between the walkway and the street and was a mature tree, so who knows? The house in front of it did have a fig tree growing in the front yard, so I thought the owners might have ninja planted an extra fig in the common area in front of the house. But there are enough figs in this area that it could just be coincidence.

No idea as to cultivar but it does look really good.... Love the beautiful red color of the interior... The wasp changes the playing field so significantly that it hard to tell how a great California fig will perform elsewhere... Congrats on getting the cuttings rooted and growing!

Reminds me of a Stroz fig that I have. I only got two figs this year from grafts. I got two cuttings from the CRFG scion exchange. There is a small write up on it, that starts on pg 3. http://crfg-la.org/September2014.pdf

Looks great! You're right that the coloring is similar, but I think the figs we picked had a much smaller eye (of course, didn't bother to photograph it so can't be positive), and also white freckles, which I don't see on this Stroz.

Here is the other one that I left on the tree longer, it should have been picked a day or two sooner.

Sarah, how do the leaves compare to your El Molino?
Calvin, Wish list is to finish working on the new house, someday.

Calvin, that's an interesting question. I was thinking it seemed (to my limited knowledge) like a Patlican type. The younger leaves at the base of my El Molino look like the Palo Alto unknown's that I posted a pic of, but the mature top leaves on the El Molino are much more finger-like. The Palo Alto tree only had leaves like the ones I posted.

I guess I will just have to grow it out and see.

I actually didn't mark it, we parked after circling around the surrounding residential area looking for parking for a while. Will have to look for it again if the cuttings don't make it!
