  • Bournabat 2016 (first fig off the tree)

This one has been long awaited. A large, attractive fig. It had a very unusual flavor -- others have described it as "stringy marshmallow" and I can see where they're coming from. It did taste like marshmallow, oddly enough.

I believe but am not 100% certain that it requires the wasp.

A rare photo of the fruit. That looks interesting, is it a keeper?

Get the wasp established over there and I'll send you an AL when my plant is bigger. Otherwise, come visit in 2 or 3 years and there should be enough to go around!

Was the one you tasted stringy? The marshmallow taste sounds like it would go great with a cup of hot Coco in the mornings.

Looks great, roast it with chocolate on top and place into Graham crackers. I don't if I would keep anything that tastes like marshmallow.

I don't know yet. It wasn't my instant favorite or anything, but it was interesting. The taste and texture were both a bit odd and unlike any other fig. Stringy (texture) marshmallow (flavor), sweet enough but not exactly what I was expecting in terms of consistency and flavor. It's definitely an outlier.

The tree is only about 1-2' tall and not kept in a prime location with lots of sunlight, so definitely going to keep it to try again next year. It may grow on me.

Marshmallow flavor.....I didn't see that one coming. That sure is a good looking fig though.

I'm growing a UCD Bournabat in TX, hoping that it does not need the wasp. As for flavor, if this is your first time getting fruit, it is not indicative of what it should be like, especially if you're growing it in pot. It will only get better as I experience from many varieties.
There are a lot of variables that can affect taste, including missing watering even for a day during the growing season.

I have a nice rooted cutting from last year that I bought after seeing it recommended on the Texas A&M website. Now I am reading it needs the wasp. Doesn't sound good for Louisiana.

Be sure to let us know if your fruit ripens or drops!

Yes, I know, it should get better. I did think it looked remarkably good for a first fruit on a small potted tree. It wasn't terrible, though marshmallow is not my favorite flavor. And I'm not the first to think it tastes like marshmallows!

My first Bournabat split with all the watering I’ve been doing in the heat but it was still good: a large fig that is pink on the inside with a moderate plus level of sweetness, melon taste, still mild and good with a noticeable seed crunch. I didn’t notice any taste or texture that resembled marshmallows. It wasn’t anywhere near as sweet.

Interesting Sarah. I guess my kids would have no problem eating this one. Shame we don't have the fig wasp in Florida when we have almost every other bug known to man.

Well, Mike, I guess you can't have ALL the bugs.
