Need Cuttings for Fig Class

It's that time of year again. I'll be teaching my semi-annual fig class in early spring and I'll need cuttings to give the students to root.

A big shout of thanks to all who donated last year.

I have cuttings from my Hardy Chicago to give out but if anyone wants to donate cuttings to the cause I'd be delighted to use them. To be practical I'd need 10 - 40 cuttings of a variety suitable for a first timer to root. Cuttings should be between 1/4 and 3/4" in diameter with over 3/8" preferred. They should be at least 6" long although 8" - 10" is preferred.

Last year 90% of the cuttings took root.

Not sure if I can get 10 of each but I just might be able to get close to it 😉

I guess both are fine if they're not too hard for a beginner to root. Writing anything you know about the fruit or growth would be helpful.

I will tell you that I root 10 random cuttings before the presentation. I talk about soils and a bunch of other things, then I demonstrate cutting prep and they do each step with me. When we're done I put the cutting I did in a box at the podium. They all work on their next cutting and I go around and help. Once everyone's done I walk back to the podium and tell them that theirs will take 3-5 weeks to root but because I'm more experienced mine root faster. I take one of the pre-rooted cuttings out of that same box and show them what they roots look like and talk about when and how to up pot them It's always good for a laugh.

Bob... I am planning on cutting down to ground level my Bronx Italian Purple UNK figs some time next week when I get back from the woods. I was going to package them up in lots of 5 and offer them to the forum members who want some free, except for postage, very prolific, strong rooting figs... the kind that someone described as being strong enough to root and grow in the middle of a multi lane freeway (I like that description). Since there are 2 separate bushes, I suspect that I can both package them up for forum members as well as provide you 2 or more dozen pencil sized cuttings for your classes. Since I am really only projecting toward next weeks activity, do you want me to put some aside for you and package them up? There is not much I can tell you about them except what I already have, they are classified as UNK, they haven't shown a lick of FMV that I can recall in the 25 years that I have had the plant and provide some leaf pictures. Let me know by PM if you want them and provide a mailing address....

I'd love them. As long as they'll root for newbies they'll be great. It's best if I know their names so I can tell the people a little about them. 40 of each, max, please. Although if you want to donate to the urban garden you can send more.
