started a topic Mt Etna Fig Varieties

    Mt Etna Fig Varieties

Below is a list of varieties that might be thought of as Mt Etna (or Mongibello) fig cultivars, strains, sports, or close relatives due to their identical, very, or somewhat similar leaves and fruit. Most or all seem to be relatively early to ripen (main crop). This is a tentative list always open for subtraction, deletion, or other correction. I put it together based on research and some direct observation. (More information at a previous ourfigs thread.) As far as I'm aware, this type of fig has been formally studied mainly under the name Marseilles Black.
    1. Marseilles Black
    2. Hardy Chicago
    3. Takoma Violet
    4. Gino’s Black
    5. Dark Portuguese
    6. Sal’s EL/GS
    7. Salem Dark
    8. Black Bethlehem
    9. Jersey Fig
    10. Martini
    11. Don Fortissi Black
    12. Keddie
    13. Hardy Pittsburgh
    14. Hardy Hartford
    15. Mt Etna Unknown (Mongibello 1)
    16. GM #11 (Sicilian Dark)
    17. Abba
    18. NJ Red
    19. San Donato (Calabria)
    20. Dominick’s
    21. Macool
    22. Bari
    23. Rosetta

Much of the below I posted as a sub-comment on the recent Celeste thread (http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/figs-home/6445-question-on-fig-names-celeste). I thought it
