How many cuttings of each variety do you need?

I am thinking 4 or 5 cuttings of a variety would give us a decent shot at having one or two to live.

I set up three 3x6ft tables in class. One table has a shop light with four t8 flourescent bulbs over it with a blueish spectrum. Next to it is the same but with t5 bulbs with more orange in the spectrum. Last table has a 400watt metal halide over it with a bulb specifically for plant growth. HOPEFULLY , we can successfully grow a few fig trees to give to the kids and community, learn something in the process and bring people together to help one another.

Sounds like a great set up! Might I suggest getting a couple T8 bulbs to mix with 2 you already have in your 4 bulb shoplight that are 6500k in the light spectrum. From what I've read (& used successfully) 6500k fluorescent light is ideal for the early/vegetative growth phase.. warmer spectrum light is great for later when you reach the point you want to induce flowering/fruiting phase. But mixing the different spectrums may also work out very nicely. Also getting a few of those single bulb 150watt equivalent shoplights that can clip on are great to add (and very cheap to boot! Lowes or Home depot usually have them for about $10). They enable you clip the shoplight fixture near odd areas to hit leaves that otherwise wouldn't get much light. Really worked out well for me.. just an idea 😉👍🏼

Jamie, what marker did you use to label your cuttings? I need to get one and like it.
I actually did mix bulbs to cover spectrums, just leaning more orange for the t5 unit. Great minds think alike.heheh

Oh I use fine paint markers! Aren't they awesome? lol! You can get them at any arts & crafts store like Michaels or AC Moore, heck target & walmart probably have em too 👍🏼Sounds like you've got a really well thought out set up, you'll do great!

If you are teaching these kids how to root wouldn't you be just as happy with some nice healthy unknown cuttings as opposed to these "name" varieties?
If so, I have some beauties for the kids

Great question!
Being newish to figs, I did online research on as many fig varieties that I could. I want to give students the best shot at growing a fig tree that will do well in our hot humid sometimes rainy environment that has a bunch of bugs. I also wanted them to be the best tasting varieties that I could possibly get. I even posted and asked the experts ( OURFIGS people). I started with hundreds of varieties and narrowed it to the list you see now. I am collecting a local unknown celeste type to propagate as well.

I think you could do well with the local Celeste unknown. As a local plant, you know it would suit your conditions. And if it a Celeste, I am a big fan of that plant. I grow a Celeste and it is quite tasty.

I agree with you Coop. Celeste is good a good fit.
I imagine unknown varieties have plenty of chance to be great figs. That is a generous offer to help. Any idea how your unknowns would do in 104 degree summers, 90% humidity, large amounts of rain and bugs that attack Figs?
This year (if we can have any success),I would like to grow the trees to get future cuttings from. I also think it may be easier for the Special ed department to sell known varieties. I am definitely taking a couple chances too though. heheh
