  • Paint Pens for Plastic Pots

I looked for quite a while to find reasonably priced paint pens. I found these paint pens on EBay to label my plastic pots. They are as good as the expensive ones. It took over a month to get them, but they work great and are good quality. The paint will not rub off the pots that I just tried. Only 99 cents each. I ordered 5 white ones, but dark colors are available for light colored pots. They are a fine/medium tip, (not a wide tip) but any wider would almost be a waste of paint. They are made of aluminum and have a little mixer/shaker ball inside. Good value. Go to ebay and enter this title that I copied and pasted just below. Hint: Might work to label a tree itself if it was needed.

Hi Noel, welcome to the forum! I love using the paint pens for labeling my pots, the trunk of the tree itself, and again when I am labeling cuttings that I take.. It works like a charm! I do see some of the paint has faded some on my pots after a season being exposed to the elements, but I simply gave those that have faded another coat right on top of the old one as I brought them in this winter for storage. For me it's definitely a winner 👍🏼 One suggestion for double security is to also label the main trunk just in case the paint wears off before you notice it.. I have found the pens in different arts and craft stores in the "clearance isles" for great prices too, but if you've found a good source at Ebay its always nice to not have to search around at different stores! Thanks for sharing!

Several forum members (me included) use Elmer's Painters White Paint Marker, Medium Tip usually available at Walmart for ~ $2.00 each, they're also available in several other colors.

Doh. I checked the wrong sections for paint pens at Walmart. I checked the Paint and Craft sections. I just looked online and they sell them in the Toys and Office sections.

I've found them in either the Crafts or Office sections depending on the store...

$.99 with shipping included is a steal.

I have some of the fine point Uni-Posca water based acrylic paint pens that write well but seem less durable. I seem to recall them being cheaper than they currently are but had to order a multipack. I've also tried a medium point oil based sharpie which doesn't write as well and can bleed on cuttings but seems more durable.

Still looking for the perfect pen. Looks like these might be oil based with a fine tip so I'll have to give them a try. Maybe they won't bleed as much yet be durable. Give them a try on a slightly moist cutting.

I also use elmers paint pens with good success. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also bought some china markers (grease pens) that i plan on using since they stay well in wet weather, but can come off with a rag.

There is a neat trick i found online for the china markers:

I've found the Elmer's markers don't stand up as well as the sharpies do. More of the pots labeled with Elmer's are unreadable than the ones labeled with the Sharpie oil based.

Just in case you want to kick it up a notch check out these 2 These are Industrial Oil based paint markers If you have ever been to an Automotive junkyard and seen the thousands of parts labeled with yellow paint this is it once this is on it is on for good It doesn't fade in the sun it's resistance to oil and gas the only way to remove it is to sandblast or paint remover you could paint over oily or wet items and it will stay on The Nissen felt tip is the one I use for all my cuttings and for a small amount of money they sell I believe it's a 5 pack of replaceable tips just in case you mess up the tip which I haven't had happen to me yet and yes it comes in all colors and the paint marker in the bottle has a roller ball tip like a Ball point pen it doesn't write as neat as the Nissen but the paint is bullet proof Just thought I would throw out another option

My daughter made this little memorial flower pot when her guinea pig passed away. A variety of paints on a ceramic pot and "puffy paint" at the top rim that is still very easy to read after 7+ years out in the elements. These were all just standard craft store paints and markers for elementary school projects, not sure the brand names, but as a rule they seem to hold up very well. And we miss the little guy, he was fun to have around and we still talk about all the funny things he would do.
