So I'm a little late in posting these, but I tried using barrels from work to help protect some plants. I trimmed and tied the branches together, covered them with burlap, then filled the barrels with dry mulch. with one of the taller plants, I tried a stack of two barrels to see how much it might be protected. The barrels have a slightly smaller top, which allowed me to use the cut bottoms as covers.

I think these would work very well.... As long as the dry mulch inside doesn't invite unexpected company to tunnel in and make themselves at home eating the bark of the trees.... Fabio posted that mint oil would help with mice and vole prevention so I would consider that setup with appropriate precautions....Tony - Zone 6A
