  • Hi everyone - it's been a while

So last year was a real life changer.
I'm now out in the country and near Monticello (I can finally deliver the historic figs I collected for them).
I have 65 acres and a stocked pond (damn those Blue Herons!!) to run around on - if I ever get time. Of course I can't actually run around on the pond . . . even if I had a Jesus complex trying to walk on water would be disappointing I'm afraid. Trying to run across the surface like a Basilisk Lizard would certainly fail as well. Have you ever seen the size of their feet !?

Had an accident with a bear (seriously) that destroyed a little SUV and took 10 weeks to recover from.

I have been overwhelmed with the logistics of moving 600 trees, getting in enough firewood and just trying to deal with going from 9k sq ft to 3k sq ft of space and NO GARAGE!!!
I had to build a building to stuff my collection into and will have to build more to accommodate everything next year as even though I did reduce my collection to about 225 varieties - I culled those that have not proven themselves after 5 years - I have numerous examples of certain varieties that do very well here - like Ronde de Bordeaux.

I will sell cuttings this year - hopefully for the last time as I'd much rather sell trees and fruit (well figs anyway) but I took a lot of cuttings as I was putting stuff up. I have 150+ 1g trees now coming out of dormancy I'll sell in the Spring.

I hope all of you guys have been well and happy. I think I have answered all notes sent to me by my fig friends, but if not SORRY!!! - it wasn't intentional.

I hope to be on here a lot more in 2017.

    Adios mis amigos,
    mgg

Exciting stuff & welcome back, mgg!

What other varieties besides RbD proved themselves?!

      Ross,
I hesitate to assign a value on varieties as they may do differently in other regions. Example -- Ronde de Bordeaux is an all star here but not so much in a buddies collection in Florida. I also think there are varieties that need time -- ex. LSU Purple and Mary Lane Seedless - and they change from crap to excellent.
I collect cold hardy varieties as you'll notice as I just sent you an inventory.
I will recommend RdB, Florea, St. Rita, Norella and Blanche de Deux Saissons.
For greens -- Battaglia Green, Col de Dame Blanch, Marseilles Monticello, Cavaliere, Adriatic JH.
But . . . but I have a bunch I am trialling and I do not claim these are "the best" only that I have been growing for 5+ years and they have earned a place in my future fig producing orchard.

Welcome back. Did you get mauled by the bear?

          The bear escaped unharmed.
The dog and I flipped 7 times and got the crap knocked out of us. (I say "7" times only as that's what the police said.)
We (me &"Mosby") are recovered - at least as much as we will.
          thx,
          mgg

Sorry to hear about your encounter with the bear. I haven't seen any here but my neighbor across the road has. My wife worries about them because of her bees.

thx everyone and if anyone wants my brand new inventory (about 225 varieties) just send me an email here or at [email protected] - I hope I'm not breaking any rules.
And how come I don't have any orange bars under my junior member label? I feel naked, or somehow inferior - like a fat guy on naked and afraid.

Mike the orange bars or lack thereof is not an issue with your reputation, it is more to do with members historically not marking a post as liked. The more likes you have combined with several other criteria can change your reputation and your user group.

Welcome back. I also don't know much about you although I have seen historical posts with your comments in the thread. With regard to your selling on ebay, may I ask for your eBay sellers ID so that it can be recognized as valid and not associated with an unknown or known fig scammer id in that marketplace? Thanks!
