  • Which variety of fig has the most fragrant leaves?

I will always associate the smell of fig leaves to the time I was a boy. I loved the smell of them on a hot summer day behind my grandparents garage.

Are there varieties that smell more than others? Do some smell different or do they all have a pretty similar smell?

The only "fragrance" I've noticed is the occasional smell of cat urine. Not something I want to smell ;-)

Im fairly new to this but started 12 varieties this winter. I would say the leaves of the Martenica Rimada had a strong sweet smell. I would just pick the cup up to water it I could smell it.

Olfactory senses are individually unique and each persons perception of same is different. My wife walks into the room where I have my figs and she bolts complaining of the cat urine smell. My sons, on the other hand, go into the room and they claim to absolutely love the smell of the figs and they will draw deep breathes of air through their nostrils to get a good shot of it... Go figure... I love and have always loved the smell of figs but then again, I was born in Croatia and grew up around figs so for me the smell of figs is the smell of my ancestral home...

The aromatic fig leaves perfumers use to make a woodland scent are Demeter's Fig Leaf and The Thymes' Fig Leaf and Cassis. I don't know if these produce edible figs however.

I had a Brunswick a few years ago whose leaves/cuttings had a distinct coconut scent. Very Nice. I've definitely smelt that or a very similar smell in other figs since then, but I haven't kept track of which ones. Maybe what I smell as coconut other people might smell as cat urine. (I haven't noticed any leaves having an unpleasant smell...)

Picked up Bourjesotte gris cutting in a cup that is starting to leaf out and picked it back up three times after just to smell the leaves

That's just a preview of coming attractions, professor... as Bourjasotte Gris is an incredible tasting fig.

I knew they smelled similar to something, but couldn't place it until I read the cat urine comment last year or so. Some are more fragrant than others for me.
