  • Full Sun or partial sun

The cuttings im trying to root i have in the window. I found some wilted leaves on one of them. Its right in front. Im thinking maybe too much sun. I don't know. If the little cutting gets too much sun will it wilt the leaves? Once the start growing leaves what kind of sun light do they need? I dont think its a moisture thing ive only been watering once a week.. what do you think? Too much sun or what?

If the cuttings were bare (no leafs ) when you put in front of window it's not due to the sun. Actually I'm not 100% sure of "sun shock" will wilt the leaf. More I think burn it. Wilting is normally a sign ove over watering. If leaf looks healthy but drooping it needs water and if it's curling and wilting it came out of humidity too fast. Just from my own exp.

They have been out of humidity for almost a week. And this started 2 days ago i think. Thats when i noticed it. They look to be curling up and drying. But the branch thats growing looks good actually growing new little leaves.

Leaves usually wilt because of not enough water uptake. That can be either due to dry soil or problems with the roots. You haven't explained much about what you actually have going on. How long ago did you start rooting the cuttings? Did you ever see evidence of roots? It's ideal to have roots form before leaves but that is now always the case. Keeping the cutting warm and moist will encourage rooting. Do the pots get cool at night next to the window?

Ok i started tge cuttings 3 weeks ago. I had humidity bags over till they started to leaf out. So now no bag its been a week. As far as roots i dont know i dont see any yet. They are in a window and the front ones get most of the sun and those are the ones wilting. I water about once a week. The last two days the top of the soil looks dry by the time i get home from work so i spray the soil to moisten it up. Thats about it. I got 26 cuttings and only 2 show leaf wilt.

Sounds like they don't have a big enough root system or no root system too support the leaves. You should keep the humidity bags on until you are sure there is a healthy root system.

Im very light on the watering because i dont want to over water. I just scratch away some soil from the top snd it looks a bit dry. Can under watering cause the leaf wilt too? Im using a spray bottle and just give each plant a couple sprays.

I agree with Brian. No roots or not enough.

So if i got the cuttings in solo cups. Non transparent ones how can you tell if roots are sufficient. 3 cuttings in clear containers. Do i judge by the clear ones?

It is possible to overheat the roots in some windows. I have a collection of cut pc's of cardboard and I always put a pc of cardboard in front of the area where the roots are. Otherwise it fries the roots on the sun side of the cup. Not saying that is what happened but if you put your hand on the sun side of the cup and it's blazing hot you will know the answer.

As others have posted, I am guessing you don't have enough roots yet to support the leaves. I don't use humidity bags so don't have much experience with something like you have going on. But to change from a humid environment to a much more arid one is a big challenge. Perhaps moving into a tub where you can place the lid over it to maintain humidity would help and gradually open it more to see how the leaves react so that you can quickly reverse course would be good. I root in pots and can usually gauge root development by root showing through the drainage holes.

I don't know how they are looking today but you might need to trim off leaves and just leave the bud and give them more time to develop roots. You might be in a situation where they need to be rescued. It might not be that serious but if you don't see any roots in your clear cups I think you might need to take drastic measures.

harvey, the best thing i ever did was move from humidity bags/bins to buddy tape (parafilm), open air environment. i have about 117 of 120 plants in mini-tree pots that are still alive and budding.i just take the trays (16 fig pots for each tray) outside and mist them for a few minutes from about 6 feet high every week. i used the cone setting on my hose. take them back inside after misting. 100% promix HP. glad i followed your advice.

I checked the roots on 1 cutting. I let the soil fall away frim the cutting. It had 3 roots about a quarter inch long each. Id day for that plant its been about 2 weeks since i started it. Is that normal or should there be more roots. They were white too. The cutting has 2 leafs on it.
