  • Im new too, hello!

Hello everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. Im Karolina.

I got into a learning mode to create a food forest in the desert on our 1 acre property over the last few years. Recently I became obsessed with figs and which varieties to grow. I learned there are many hundreds of different varieties! I'm now very interested in collecting rare or unheard of (to most people) varieties that have a wonderful taste I figure it will captivate others to want to garden as well when they taste these amazing flavors! Truth be told, I have only tasted a black mission from the store and my imagination runs wild at the flavor profiles I've read about. My preference (I believe from what I have read) is toward complex / any berry flavors and also the honey varieties. Im currently starting my first fig cuttings in the garage, and they are coming along (most are rooted and have their first leaves)!

    My current stick collection includes:

    Violette de Bordeaux
    Ronde de Bordeaux
    Negronne
    Marseilles Black VS
    Italian Honey
    Verte Green Ischia
    Vasilika Sika
    Red Lebanese Bekaa
    Nero 600m
    Bourjassotte Grise
    Malta Black

Hoping I do well for my first time. I am still deciding whether I am in over my head or this is reasonable amount for a first timer (about 35 total cuttings)... Looking to connect with others, lean on their experience, learn, exchange and grow more figs! Any advice, pointers or recommendations are appreciated

Ive uploaded some current pics. The first one is the approximate root size of cuttings when they were transplanted from their plastic shoeboxes with coconut coir to their own tree pots. The others are of the collection in general. Think I'm coming down with fig fever!

Welcome Karolina. You have some top shelf figs. A nice varieties of flavors and great quality as well. If I might suggest, check out several local nursery's and get yourself a two year old panache and one or two others so that you can enjoy a greater harvest while your cuttings are getting established. My wife and I live in Banning and we have good friends in Temecula. If you are planning to be out in the Banning area PM me and I'll give you my address and show you what I'm growing. I'm kind of a newbie too. We can compare notes. Be well. Noel

Welcome Karolina! Your figs look very good, a lot of good varieties on that list. You are definitely off to a great start. As recommended above panache would grow well for you, I would also recommend col de same figs. Be careful on the col de dame grise, you will be wanting the baud version. We're I you I would look for natalina as well, no clue on the taste but it's an extreme late season fig. It ripens for Christmas. You have the ability to have figs from just through November, enjoy!

Baud is an extremely reputable fig nursery in Provence, France, the man's name is Pierre Baud. If someone's tree is French and comes from him however many times removed they will put (baud) after the name. It's a way to know you have the real deal, not always important but with col de dame grise it is.
