  • Albo

Anyone growing this Italian variety that can share experiences? Two crop, yellow, green fig that came recommended for my climate-limited location. Got some in a trade which are rooting now.

The only thing that I've seen about it is FMD's translation of a Tuscan nursery listing.

Albo - ottima varietà, tra le più resistenti al gelo, coltivata soprattutto in Toscana per i bei fichi dorati dal sapore delicato. Produce fioroni e forniti di buona pezzatura.
Great variety! This particular fig is among the most resistant to frost. Grown in Tuscany mainly for its beautiful golden figs and delicate flavor. Produces brebas and a main crop of large sized figs.

I believe Albo is growing in at Pomona Gardens in Puglia. I can assure you it's rare here in the US. I will try to find a photo.

It is certainly a historic heirloom fig, with many synonyms in the different regions where is has been grown. Probably circulating around here under a different name! Marsailles, perhaps? I'm most interested in the cold hardiness, hefty breba crop of supposedly good quality. It has been a vigorous rooter, making it through the starting gate far quicker than other varieties in the same batch.

Ross has a listing for this variety on figbid now. Anyone care to share their experiences with this one? It was the largest early variety in my collection this season from a 2nd year plant. It wasn't even in a full sun location, and I will certainly prioritize it next year! Very vigorous variety. Mild honey flavor that my son and I thought was quite tasty and also some unique subtle flavors. Hoping for some breba in 2019.... pictured in the middle of this plate-

Hi Jesse, that cutting I got from you grew to a 5 ft sized plant and it made a few figlets that are about 3/4" long right now. Don't know if it will make it to ripening but I think we still have 2 and half months of warm weather to go. I see it listed as 6b cold hardy for ALBO. IS it really that cold hardy??

My Albo plants are ripening just behind my earliest varieties, this is pretty exciting for me as what other folks call ‘mid season’ varieties are often too late for me. They set a ton, dropped a few and now are coming on strong. Nice size, firm consistency and this season I taste Click image for larger version

Its super early. As early as RdB. And extremely productive too here in the PNW.

At this time I am not too impressed with the flavor. Maybe the tree has to mature.

Albo and Iranian Candy are somewhat similar in color and flavor profile and ripening time(early), Albo bears larger fruit and is a more vigorous grower. I’m happy to have them both in my collection

+1, Albo has been an early and decently heavy breba producer for me as well. Its also loaded with main crop.
                          Thanks zone5figger for this tree.

BOO HOO, I got mine from Jesse a few years ago and it grew nicely and I even took several air layers to make a few more trees. But so far not one fig .Its so weird how some make it and some dont as they mature. I guess next year will be it. Also noticed its a bit more vulnerable to Fig Rust than many of my other figs. .
