  • Complex Taste

Does complex taste mean "indescribably delicious" or "I don't know"?

There are some things in life I have a hard time getting my head wrapped around and being able to describe certain taste is one of them. I have the same problem with wine taste descriptors.

    Please enlighten me.

Complex for me means "multiple flavors" or "flavor layers". A ripe Violette de Bordeaux develops different flavors in the skin, flesh and pulp. The skin has a sharper intense flavor, the flesh is rich and savory, and the pulp has a sweet, mild berry flavor. Even with this surprisingly good taste experience its still ranked by many at about an 8 on a 10 scale. A ripe Hardy Chicago is sweet, berry flavored, but has a distinct sharp (acidic) after taste many rank it at about 7 - 8.

Some have tried to use wine descriptors to describe the complex flavors as they become more intense due to dehydration and ripeness, but the best and simplest way is to taste them for yourself, http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/figs-ho...-flavor-groups by trying one from each Flavor Group.

I agree with Pete. Instead of simply a berry flavor, a fig might have a plum and berry flavor to it. You'll know it once you experience it.

Complex taste followed with the lingering taste in the mouth is yummielicious heavenly fruit, especially
some seeds left. I have a problem describing the complexness of fig taste.

Thanks, forgot to add the "nutty" flavor of seeds which gets even stronger if they've been caprified (fertilized by fig wasps).
