If its on the same scale as here in the US, Zone 8a is great for growing fig trees warmth wise, but may need some minimal protection in the 1st couple years during winter to protect it from unexpected harsh cold snaps.. wow I am shocked that the UK and the Netherlands has such mild grow zones. For some reason I thought it was much colder in those places.. I need to get out of the US more often lol!

Wow! I'm floored that the south of the UK reaches zone 10. I'm jealous. I know you probably don't get the summer highs but that's like Tampa, Florida. Anyone growing citrus or olives there?

Very nice.... My figs are still small here in Z6

Thats wonderful. If the olives are doing well you certainly have a lot of fig options

I understand most of the UK is much milder than where I am... Just that until I saw that map above I had no idea you had areas that moved into zone 10. In the coastal south that's getting into a citrus climate.

There are only a handful of fig varieties that I'm able to leave in the ground all year. Most are potted and go into the garage after first frost. The ones that are in ground need winter protection. It's a lot of work in the fall.

My lemon, banana and olives... Forget it.... All in large pots and absolutely must go indoors.

There's a small region on an island in southern British Columbia where a guy has found a very rare micro climate. He began growing olives some years ago and it almost to the point where he'll be making the first (can't believe I'm about to say it) Canadian Olive Oil. Really something...

Glad your trees are doing well. Growth of everything in my area has been slow this year due to heavy rain and dark skies.....

The Zones thing is a good indicator for cold hardiness,I.e average lows and highs, most of the UK doesn't get the extremes that can be seen in the US and Canada, maybe a once in 40 years or so deep deep freeze that would be a killer for figs. The problem here is more the lack of heat/short summer, some varieties just need much longer at more constant warm temperature than our unpredictable summers can provide-I have to say though the last few summers have been awesome and if you live on the south coast you are at a significant advantage

So true but if it gets too cold I can put them in the greenhouse.
