Always in the wrong part of the country for the cool stuff.
I hope everyone that goes has a great time, learns a lot and gets try some figs to bring home some trees.Scott - Colorado Springs, CO - Zone 4/5 (Depending on the year) - Elevation 6266ft

I still want to know what goes on at the field day. I have 10 LSU varieties. It would be nice to see where they came from.
It's a long trip to make for me. I got an invite from James Robin to check out his fruit orchard. This might be a opportunity for a road trip.Jerry, Canyon Lake TX 8b

What is the LSU Fig Field day?
For the unknowing the Fig Field Day hosted by Dr. Charlie Johnson and the LSU staff is three hours of sensory overload. You get to meet fellow fig lovers, Listen to a short presentation on the fig, Ask questions to experts, see the REAL LSU fig trees (at least the ones left there) and for those willing get together afterwards and eat lunch after the event. Some of us will also eat breakfast prior to the meet. Bring your cameras and video recorders there is much that you will want to capture. I hope that all of you will come if at all possible. I drive over four hours one way and would not think of missing it. Hope to see all of you there.
That is my version and here is Brackishfiggers. Andy I hope you don't mind,
True all that, and yet, it's just three hours out in a field, in the mid-summer LA sun, sweating with a bunch of other fig nuts and hearing a brief lecture and Q&A that primarily just confirms everything you already know. And many of the rows have been removed since the last event.
I can't wait!!
You don't want to miss this if you can make it. Anyone (until my truck is full) that can make it to my house by 0300 on the morning of the meet can ride the rest of the way. Hershell has first dibs on SHOTGUN! I generally meet others for breakfast in Baton Rouge before the meet and then after we have lunch somewhere. This year we MAY have an opportunity to visit with Frankenfig. Backishfigger is thinking of scheduling a viewing at his house. Hope that happens!
This used to be an annual event and it did not happen last year. This truly may be the last time it ever occurs. Don't be sad make it happen.Darkman AKA Charles in Pensacola South of I-10 zone 8b/9a

Dr Johnson sent me the following on 6/17/15:
Yes, tentatively it will be Saturday July 11 from 9 -12. I am just getting things together for this event. I will try to finalize plans next week and get an announcement out to interested groups.
I have not yet heard back from him, but I will reach out Wed or so if I stll have not. I seem to have a lot of folks excited (including me) and don't want to let everyone down, but the key word, I think, was tentative.

Brackishfigger welcome indeed. Glad you are here. For those that don't know he is a Master Fig Grafter and ill say no more. He'll have to fill in the blanks. Maybe with a picture or two.Darkman AKA Charles in Pensacola South of I-10 zone 8b/9a

I'm just an amateur with some degree of success and an atypical choice of medium, along with a platform to show off (my thread at F4F). But thanks, my ego loves the praise!

For clarification Hershell is a Master Grafter i.e. he can take two toothpicks, graft them together and six weeks later you will have a wooden flag pole......well maybe I stretched it a little, just a wee bit.
Andy on the other hand is a Master Fig Grafter. He has specialized in the grafting of Figs and done very well at it.

It's on! Received from Dr. Johnson today:
Yes, Saturday , July 11, 9-12, I hope we have some ripe fruit by then . I would like to encourage people to bring samples of their favorite figs.

There aren't may bodies of water in south LA that aren't at least partially brackish, so it's a geographic thing as much as any other. Plus my aquarium is brackishwater, a bit of an odd bird in the hobby.
-
Not odd bird at all very impressive to have brackish tank. I had 13 salt reef and fish tanks in life. Smallest was 92 bow front and biggest was 310 wave front. These guys think fig collecting is expensive try packing 310 gallons of coral in one tank ahAaaa!

Ok! Now we can start planning in ernest. I am definately going to be there and plan to get there early enough for breakfast and will eat lunch afterwards with the possibility of visiting others nearby after lunch. I have one slot filled in my truck at this time and room for one more if any are interested.
If at all possible everone should attempt this. May be the last time the opportunity presents itself.
Bring a cooler of water if you come as it will feel like an Italian Pizza oven out there.Darkman AKA Charles in Pensacola South of I-10 zone 8b/9a
