Thank you, Wills, for opening up a new place to go to to talk about figs. I have no doubt this will be a winner.
Looking for many years of enjoyment here and I will do all I can to contribute.

    Good luck

It sounds like Fox News, fair and balanced. Of coarse it depends on who you talk to and there views. I personally like for everyone to be treated fair. Thanks Wills

Hello Pete, Art, Kelby and Hershell.

Good to see you all here. I am confident this will workout. As long as we don't let the prisoners run the asylum we will be fine.
This is a fig community and I have plenty of figs to talk about. I have info to share with everyone.

As always, I will always be eager to help.

And I agree what Wills said, doesn't matter if you hear the same question 50 times a day.
My motto is, no question is a dumb question. The dumb one is the one that's never asked.

How close is too close to plant trees in a 48' by 96' house. I would like to get as many protected as possible.

Are you planting in-ground or in pots?
There were some pictures of potted fig trees in houses at http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=7280662

I haven't used anything other than a small 12x20 hoop house to extend the season for potted figs, spaced 4 feet apart, but your density would be dictated by the planned size of the trees and whether they are planted in-ground or potted. If they are regularly pruned the spacing can be relatively close. Good Luck.

BTW, they were only 6 feet tall at that spacing...

I think I'm commenting in the right spot. Pete knows a lot more on the topic, but I'm imagining high density apples planted at 2'. This would require a single trunk and almost continuous pruning, for figs, though. I presume you're growing all different varieties, so one variety out growing it's neighbors is a major concern at such spacing too.

Me, I'd do 6' spacing. Not sure what height your house will be, but they should fit well. Like you said, lots of pruning in summer and winter.

got mine planted 6' on center. i assume this will cause some dwarfing.
i'd rather have 12 small trees than 6 big ones.

              • #10
Pete. They will be in ground and I realize some grow faster than others. I also plan to plant a few Capri figs in ground in each greenhouse and around barns to try to hold fruit year round in micro climates. I want the trees to be productive but don't mind heavy pruning in the fall.

Kelby it looks like about 6' spacing is going to be the best, I'm just wondering if that is too close.

I move the post and info to your new Topic...

Actually 6' on center could work if the spacing between rows (aisles) are greater than 6'

On the 5 picture maximum per post I will change it, 5 is just the default setting, it is on the to do list. I did bump the photo size from 900k to 1 mb. That one you have to have a balance as it is paid by the GB.
