Riddle me this.....

To continue the games that Hershell started I have a riddle for the board. The first person to solve the riddle will get an airlayer of the "FMV Free Black Ischia". It will be ready to ship in a week. For a description of the plant see here http://www.ebay.com/itm/121552458910 but you will get a plant in a one gallon pot not cuttings. You will also be awarded the custom title riddle master OR a custom title (within reason) of your choosing that will last 3 months. You must already be a registered member as of 7:00PM EST 7/3/15 to qualify, but if it goes well there may be another one.

Answer here only.....I will give more hints daily if needed. I think this is difficult but who knows, someone may get it right away. Don't bother with google, it is a creation of my own twisted brain.

Wills, I have seen a couple references to the FMV Free Black Ischia. Can you expand on origin of this tree? Curious if this tree had ATL origins.

Black Ischia is a tough one as there are a few different ones out there. This is not the UCDavis BI as it lacks the pink petioles. If though you donated a fig to UCDavis and you called it doughnut they simply would call it doughnut so the name does not mean much.


From what I know a group got together to have what they considered the best tasting fig there is "cured" of FMV. The process was expensive but through tissue culture they were able to remove the FMV. Some of the resulting plants were sold for a LOT of money and a friend bought one of those and gave me an airlayer. Can confirm it appears to be FMV free and it grows very fast. I was at my sources home last weekend and asked him if he had any figs on it and he said no. But as we were standing there looking at it I spotted a single fig. As happens a lot of times the TC procedure makes the plant revert to a juvenile stage so they take awhile to fruit. My plant is some 4' tall and wide and is actually bigger than my sources but so far no fruit on it. That is the story as I know it.

Thanks for the info. My USDA UC Davis tree is like 4 years and 6 inches, but it does have a couple fruit, but I am leaving them on as what is the harm stunting the growth It actually died to ground level protected in a pot garaged over winter Hoping it will eventually take off. I just remember one tree that there was some speculation on from around ATL, and then of mentions of one you and couple others mentioned. Thanks for the detail and games by Herschel and yourself. I like the challenges and will have to see maybe what I can put up in similar activity.
