  • VdB fig color

Questions of a relatively new fig grower: I have quite a few dark figs including VdB, which I have noticed gets a marked reddish hue to the developing figs. I don't have Negronne, Petit Negri, Petite Aubique which are supposed to be similar, and I was wondering if these others get the same early coloration. All of my other dark figs look green at this early stage, is this unusual?

Even the baby figlets have a little color. This photo was from last year:

Yes, it is normal for this family of figs.

My VdBs look the same. I believe sunlight darkens them more than they would be if they were shaded. Kathleen's Black does this as well.

That's normal for VDB. My VDB, Negretta and Valle Negra are reddish also. As for Petite Negra (Morle) I don't remember. It got a severe haircut and was slow to grow this spring.

Is there a more appealing unripe fig color? Maybe Panache, maybe not.

Ed, Its typical for for the "Bordeaux type" fig cultivars... I have several VDB's, Petri Negri EL and Beers Black and they all have tinted figs. They sometimes also develop tinted Petioles (leaf stems) at my location.
