  • Well it has been an interesting couple of days.

As I mentioned in a previous thread I had bought a new GH, my third. The weather finally cooperated (sort of) and went down yesterday, left at 5:00am to start the dismantle. Sunny and 94 is not friendly, took 6 bottles of water and burned through them by noon, thankfully the cooler was filled with ice as that gave more drinking water. The dismantle was going pretty well just a LOT of work, 500 trips up and down a 10 foot ladder takes its toll, not as young as I use to be.

The winery I bought the GH from is directly adjacent to a prison, you actually go down the road to the prison and turn and go up a grassy field about 100 feet from the prison gate, easier access that way as the GH is at the edge of the winery grounds. All was going well. There was a prisoner, I assume a trustee mowing the grass outside the prison fences on a riding mower about 40 feet from my neighbor and I under the watch of a guard. The guy was mowing away from the guard when all of a sudden the corrections officer yelled at the guy who of course could not hear him over the mower and then the officer bolted down the hill after him at a dead run. We just kind of looked on a bit befuddled. The officer caught up to him and shut the mower off and the two of them ran back inside the prison gate and left the mower where it was. THEN all hell broke loose, an alarm started blaring from inside the prison. Prison guards were running everywhere. Then the cop cars started coming one after the other down the road to the prison. Looked at the neighbor and said "that can't be good". Then the helicopters arrived, circling low and slow....... The COO of the winery, the person I bought the GH from came down in his vehicle to advise us there had been an escape. I guess since they border the prison so closely they are notified quickly if there is an incident. An officer from the prison came over and told us we should leave......it is about an hours drive and I had no desire to leave, I said "should leave or have to leave? He said should, I said no thank you. The officer relented and they had an officer stay near by to make sure all was ok. What a ZOO......when we finally finished for the day about 5:00 PM at the end of the road where the prison drive meets the highway there was 8 media trucks and people everywhere.

I woke up this morning SORE and did not want to leave, but did, again at 5:00am this time by myself and when I turned off to head down the drive to the prison I was stopped and told I could not proceed down the road. I tried to explain it is a PUBLIC road, which it is, right till you get to the prison gate and as you can guess that did not work at all. I explained to the officer I was not going to the prison, I was here yesterday, she did not care, she said you have to turn around, I said call your supervisor......she did, he said NO. So I said call his supervisor, and after some considerable argument and me stubbornly refusing to turn around she did so. So the cop called her higher up back and he then relented and called the Captain who said "oh its fine he was there yesterday". That whole episode cost me 20 minutes and a spike in my blood pressure.

But the GH is down and transported back here......btw here it is before the dismantle started, well I had already removed the doors. The tables, 4 runs of them I think were a harder job than the GH itself, they were cemented in and just a royal PITA. Btw the inmate is still on the run, stole a truck at some point after the escape and it had a pistol in it.

Haha! I had a day off from work yesterday. What did I do? Spent almost the entire day gardening out in the heat. At the end of the day I showered and decided I needed a haircut. Just as I pulled into the parking lot I starting feeling a little queasy. I thought it would pass but I had heat exhaustion. It was not a fun haircut! I was fine after I went home drank a lot of fluids and laid down.

Something about your adventure makes me want to watch Paul Newman as "Cool Hand Luke" again. Looks like a great greenhouse, and glad that all worked out well for you.

      Ed,

I know. Of ALL days, a prisoner just had to escape THAT day. Like I said I was not worried in the least, we both have concealed carry permits and while I did not have a pistol with me the neighbor did. I did though at that point go and take my keys out of the ignition where I had left them

I don't know what would make me more nervous, the convict on the loose or all the keyed-up law enforcement people who might mistake me for the convict.

I read prison and escape and thought of Brad Shelton's song "Ol' Red." LOL. You, sir, must have a lawyer or some sort of law enforcement in your background. Most people if a cop said they should leave, they'd turn around and go...much less "insist" they get on the phone and call their higher ups. Happy for you you got everything taken care of ;-)

Well.......in this case the escapee was African American, wearing prison greys with a silver stripe up the sides and I am white dressed in shorts and a T shirt and up a ladder lol so........would be hard to have a case of mistaken identity.

It is all in the wording If she had said leave now or I am going to arrest you I would have said yes Ma'am you have yourself a good day.

Really cool story Wills. Extremely nice greenhouse. And, it looks like a lot of work for it to come down and appears like it's gonna be even more to go back together. If I were closer I would say "If you need some help, Don't hesitate to ask. I'll send Ms. Dana over in the morning!" Bwa Ha Ha Ha!!!!!

I know......this is just for mother plants all on ground, a place to keep them for a year or two before going in ground. This past winter showed me that planting out small figs is best avoided. While I have the other two GH's I have very little floor space.

Btw to show how close it was to the prison, The red arrow shows the GH location and you can see Lake correctional right below it.

I just looked, they caught him last night in Orange county. He was doing 15 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Had 5 years left, now will have another 10 at least, not very bright.

Well......about half way down the road to the prison there is a sign that states "From this point forward this is a restricted high security zone" I was not sure on the legalities of having a weapon inside that zone and I was WELL inside that zone so opted not to. The neighbor who had no idea it was a restricted zone was armed because I never told him It simply slipped my mind.
