Good looking fig Mike. Maybe not enough sun? You mentioned that a lot of your trees are in partial shade / sun location. They do well growing in partial sun but some of them need full sun to develop full flavor!!

Usually I read that once put to ground, the flavor improves, it is perplexing that it diminished so greatly. It will be interesting to see what the OD of nutrients brings with next years crop.

Good question and I wish I knew. Next spring it will get an overdose of
nutrients and we will see if it improves.

What would cause the decrease in taste?

That is a very nice looking fig. Any idea as to why it was better last year? The weather or maybe getting used to being in the ground?

Sorry to hear that. My MF has its first fruits ever and I'm really looking forward to tasting them. Unfortunately with the drought (SoCal), the poor hungry critters are zeroing in on the figs with a vengeance. I'm getting some, but not as many as hoped.

started a topic Maltese Falcon 2015 Main (UPDATED)

    Maltese Falcon 2015 Main (UPDATED)

A fourth year tree moved from a 10 gal pot to in ground in April 2015.
This was one of the best tasting figs last year. This is the first fruit
harvested by me this year. The flying critters have gotten the others.

This fig was very bland and was also lacking in sweetness. So
    disappointing. Only a 5 at best on a 1-10.

    * I have attached an updated photo and rating. This fig today had a good
bit more berry flavor and sweetness. The skin was chewy and had a sweetness
of its own. We gave this one a 7 on a 1-10 which is a nice improvement.
