  • Atlanta area folks - please help with fig tree liquidation!

Hey everyone! I know haven't been terribly active on this forum, but between work and getting the house ready for a kiddo (one week left!), I've barely had time for my garden much less online activities. Making things even more fun, my husband just accepted a job offer in Seattle, so we'll be moving there around the new year. This move means that I need to sell off most of my fruit tree inventory, so if you live in the area, please send me a message and make me an offer! Most come in either a SIP or fabric pot.

I haven't had a chance to take inventory and see what didn't survive the combination of heat/no water (we live right down the street from the huge water main break in Dekalb a month ago), but here is my most current list:

Even the ones I won't be selling off (I've heard DK and Bordeaux varieties do alright in Seattle, and I don't think I'm yet ready to part with my Black Madeira, Dr. Gowaty, Barada, etc.), I'll be pruning down to the stump to ship to the new place, so cuttings will be available for those varieties. And no, I am currently unwilling to ship any of these, they must be picked up. I also have a number of other fruit trees still in containers, like Asian pears, cherries, peaches, a plumcot, blueberries, persimmons, currants, elderberries... you get the idea. So please, if you have any interest send me an e-mail at elisha(dot)tamar(at)gmail(dot)com, I'll be happy to double check that tree is one of the survivors and send you a picture. Alternatively, let me know when you'd like to come on by and shop around, first come, first serve!

    Take care,
    Tamar

Tamar, unfortunately I live too far away to help you out. However, for the fig varieties you are going to keep, I was wondering if you could describe how you will get them there? I may be moving too in the next year or two and this is something I have been wondering about. How big are the containers, how big of a stump will you leave, will you do this when they are dormant, what do you estimate the cost will be of moving a container of a given size that far, is your husband freaking out that you want to move all these plants, etc? Thanks.

Steve, hah! If I were to keep too many, absolutely my husband would freak out! My goal is to keep it under 10. The ones I'm planning on keeping aren't very big, so my current plan is to wait until they are dormant, cut the trunks down to about 4 inches or so, shake off most of the dirt and ship them in newspaper. Our moving company can worry about the containers, since they won't move live plants. If anyone has better advice, though, I would love to hear it!

I've gotten a few messages from people asking if I'd be willing to ship cuttings - right now I'm focusing on getting rid of entire plants, and will give cutting preference to people who come pick things up. Once we're closer to move time I may consider it, and will post an updated list of what is available.

I wish I had time for a road trip Then I could distribute your plants along to our East Coast fig lovers on my way back up to MA.

If you ever get to the cutting stage, i'd be interested as I'm sure many others would be too.

My wife has a friend in Suwanee, is that close to you? Maybe I could have her pick some things up for me?

            Kevin,

If you're up for a road trip, sounds good to me! Suwanee isn't too far, maybe about 20 miles up the interstate from where I live.

Wish I lived closer to help you with your 'problem' fig trees. But probably better for me that I don't - I'm getting to the max of my storage area.

Well folks ,just like you all comented,Tamar has quite a collection. I'm very fortunate to be working a few minutes away so I stopped by and picked up five trees. Tamar is a great gal and a very good fig bud and deserves all the help we can send her way. I urge all our Atlanta crowd to take the time and stop at her place. Tamar,Thanks very very much for trusting me with those lovely trees that are so hard for you to depart from.I will be sending you cuttings when ever you're ready to start growing again.
Best of luck with the new coming kiddo and the move.
                best regards.

That's a great list! I'm searching for a friend in Atlanta to help me pick a few out... I'm sure they range in size, but on average? Are you pricing as you go?

Tempting. very tempting. I'm only 5 hours, all i need now is for the wife to take a trip so I can make one to Atlanta...haha. No way is she letting me go that far with her around, and she wouldn't make that trip either.

rats always live in the wrong place at the right time. Home sweet Atlanta.. Home of the 3 dollar cafe and the best wings ever. You have a mean moving company. My moving company moved a 10 foot shiffelera and a 12 foot Christmas tree. Good luck in Seattle too cloudy and rainy for me.

Yes ma'am, nice collection! Good luck on your move. I guess if it couldn't be Denver, Seattle is a nice second. Now you get the ocean and it's never really cold. Congrtats on the soon to be new addition to the family as well.
Calvin, Wish list is to finish working on the new house, someday.

I think you'd be surprised how many trees will fit into the back of a small uhaul trailer.
