From the research I've done, it would be best to winterize it especially with the last couple really cold winters.

It would survive without winterizing but may die back to the ground some years and may not produce fruit that year.

If you get a 6B winter believe any fig would need winterized or a protected microclimate or you will freeze back to ground each year. If you spending much time below 15F you will take freeze damage, much time in single digits F and you will will be froze to ground without protection. If you don't plan to protect watch for ones folks stating produce pretty early in season after freeze back to ground. It can be the best tasting productive fig there is, but if your don't ever get them to ripen after regrowing that season what good are they. I am taking that chance on a lot, but I have significant space to trial, but still after a few years I will remove for something else if I never get them to ripen. I think MBVS is a good selection for you.

Mine froze to the ground this past winter. It has grown back about
five feet tall. Lots of green figs now but only a few have ripened.
You can compare your brutal winters with mine in 7b which should
        help you make a decision.

I would minimally pile about 6 inches of mulch around the base. As other stated above, some years it will freeze to the ground. Those years you should still get a few figs I would think. Most years it will do fine.
