  • Been gone for a while

    Hey everyone...

Been away for a while. Needed a break from all the forums.

For a lot of new members ( probably joining in last 3 years or so) or even newer fig collectors, I use to post a lot on F4F forum back when it was the thing.

I am a big proponent of the Self watering containers ( growing in MA buckets are a bit easier) and belief that figs will grow anywhere and anyhow in anything as long as they have access to water.

I have experimented with different rooting methods from paper towels to straight dirt to sphagnum moss to sticking cuttings straight in water.

I use to have a large collection thanks to various members ( buying, selling and trading) that may still be here but I have since cut down to about 35.

Thanks to various people I have spoken to in last few weeks, I decided to start slowly posting again.

    Dominick

Still up there but changes season to season. Last 2 years, very good but not great. 3 years ago though it blew everything out of the water.

I still have a few I haven't tasted. Maybe combination of age and weather.

I have tried various different fertilizers and growing techniques.

I'm going back to tried and true Osmocote and pinching back buds.

Good to have you back. I take breaks from the forum from time to time also.

I do have a fig called Dominick’s unknown. Could this be attributed to you? It didn’t fruit last year so no description. Seemed like mt etna leaf pattern but they were small trees and change with time.

I think that is one from Coop, originated from his friend Dominick

Yes and no. I had a bad fig year and got frustrated about 2 years ago. But there are always a few here and there that catch my eye. The one I will forever hunt down is the real Dall'osso with the 2 tone and nut type structure depicted in the pic by Gallesio, if I remember his name correctly.

Is the Sao Miguel Dark/White the same as Azores Dark/White? Did you change the name? Harvey sells a Sao Miguel. Any idea if that was from you?

                    Fonne

                    I've never heard of these.

Brockton Greek- a small dark fig from Greece found in Brockton, MA. Dries on the tree to a very sweet raspberry like taste

Horio- phonetic pronunciation of town in Greece this tree is from. Same man as Brockton Greek. Large fig. Nice taste. May look like a BT but don't find it to be really similar.

Calvy- excellent white fig from France countryside. Red flesh.

Fonne- small dark Italian fig. Nice taste. Not too sharp.

Constans- French fig. Purplish/ Green. very good. Unfortunately splits very bad with high humidity/ rain.

Sao Miguel is same as Azores. It is the specific Island it is from in the archipelago. Some how in introducing it, the original names Sao Miguel Roxo and Sao Miguel Brandi turned into Azores Dark and Azores White unless someone else introduced another variant.

When I did start to get cuttings out, I never heard of any with that name, so they most likely are the same.

Thanks for clarifying that Azores Dark is the same as Sao Miguel Roxo: a fig I already have.

Good old Brockton... Back in the pre-gps era we spent several Christmas Eve nights lost in that city trying to find our way back to the highway towards home after family celebrations at my sister-in-laws house. Not a fun place to be lost at night. Think I'll leave that fig off my list...

Welcome me back to the forum!

Welcome back, Dom. I also took a sabbatical from the forums for a few years but came crawling back last spring. LOL. The addiction is worse than ever. Don't count on holding the line at 35 now that you've returned.
