  • Hello figophiles

Been snooping around here for the last couple weeks, finally registered after I got my first few cuttings in the mail. Already feeling the draw towards a (hopeful) fresh fig next year, will probably be bugging some of you members for more cuttings as I develop my rooting technique. Thanks for all the knowledge that I've read through, looking forward to our shared future.

Welcome, Chris, from another newbie! This is a fascinating hobby that will get into your blood. I went from a single tiny tree in June to 18 potted trees now sleeping in the basement.

Updated my signature to include my location. In NE Oregon, right along the base of the Blue Mountains. Picked up some peat today to root a couple cuttings. Going to mix with some vermicompost from the worm bin and put it on a heat mat, will post my results. Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'd recommend avoiding the peat moss and replace with vermiculite and perlite for rooting. Peat holds a lot of moisture that can cause problems while trying to get the roots established. I lost a higher percentage of my cuttings this summer when I used mixes with very much peat moss.

Vermicompost, unless sterilized or nuked, may breed gnats, I'd stay away from it until up-potting.

Welcome Chris. The world of figs is a great place hang out.

You live in a beautiful state. Some years ago I rode my Goldwing from Portland to Seaside on US26. Somewhere around Elsie I remember the ride just after a rain shower was like riding thru a rain forest with rays of sunlight shooting down thru the tree tops. What a memorable ride that was.

Hope you enjoy hanging out here.
