  • Do you know what your friends look like?

I'm attempting to start a trend of us representing ourselves.
Who would include a picture of yourself in your avatar?
I would really enjoy seeing a face to see the face behind the comments.
Please join in everybody, don't be shy.

Mine has been in my avatar since joining...together with my better looking half. Partly because when I joined I had not produced any of the pretty figs yet. Of course I don't mind the figs or other chosen photos in avatars, anything is better than the default. You quickly learn who is posting by seeing the avatar before the name.

Of course maybe some are afraid of scaring off their friends. And others are worried about comparison with "Most Wanted" posters... (j/k)

Hey figgy friends! Hope my avatar change worked.. Had a little trouble with getting a pic that would fit into that little square.. I don't have access to a desktop right now, so had to add the pic on the mobile version.

It's nice to "see" you all!

I'm allergic, but I don't bother them (or grow bee hives) and they don't bother me.

Do you keep them for the honey, or the pollination aspect, or both?

Not a high quality pic but appropriate as Chuck (Chuckles, aka, The Watcher) seems to be into figs as much as anyone else in the household. He's always underfoot around the figs, and even with the computer, if I hadn't pinned him in the corner of my arm he would have been on the keyboard. None of the pics are posed, though framed inadvertently or not. He sprawled out beside the remains of a couple figs that he let varmints devour. Latter couple pics are of him skinny a little over year ago upon first arrival from the streets or wherever. Part of a flock of turkeys that occasionally pass through, there on sidehill of a neighbor's yard. Chuck watched them too, out of the picture. They've never bothered the figs which are anyway mostly not along the edge of the woods where the flock usually passes, though one did walk across the cement slab off the back of the house at least once. Maybe I should be worried as I imagine that chickens would do a number on ripe figs.

At the risk of outing myself as a cat lady, I can appreciate a cat as cute as Chuckles here. Love the cat paw next to the figs. Was that for scale?

That was for swiping, in Chuck's mind, I'm sure. And batting about. Was constantly pushing him out of the picture, so by end of season I learned to put a door between him any pic.

                    Fitzski,

Neither. It is clay. Well a mixture of clay and as far as I can tell corn starch. It is what is in the totes I am cleaning out for the greenhouse heating system. That is the result of pressure washing 3 275 gallon totes. It is non toxic and environmentally friendly but messy as hell. It is a "dye" used to turn mulch red for home landscaping. The totes though are dirt cheap at $25 each which sure beats $100+ each. I am on tote 6.......of 30 lol.

Howdy Doug, Nice to see you as well. I would have mulched them but that spot has bindweed and some other perennials I am trying to get rid of.
Fall has been crazy, lots of trees to worry about. Made a bunch of biochar too and now trying to figure out how to use it.

Among other things, biochar is really great to use in the compost process. Any amount is ok, but shoot for something like 10-20% of the pile volume. Add it too your compost bucket bottom every time you empty it and it will help keep the bucket cleaner and smell free. That and it gives you an easy way to disperse that 10-20% in your pile as you can set the ratio in the bucket. I also like to put down a thin layer of biochar on the ground before mulching.

Thanks for sharing how you make biochar and what to do with it Greg. I have made small amounts before in retorts but it was just so much work. The pit method is really a much better way to get serious.
