• growing from seeds

    Hi Guys,

I think this question has been asked before but unable to search for it so i am asking again.

say this ebayer mmonicaherteg2012 selling Rigato del Salento seeds.

he mentioned that the tree will self pollinate, but from what i know fig trees grow from seeds will not ripe figs unless pollinate by fig wasp?

    can someone confirm my doubt?

Yep, it is indeed a monkey's promise.

Well, you'll probably get a mix of caprifigs, figs that require pollination, San Pedro types, and common figs that don't. But unless you've got a lot of patience, you might be better off getting a tried-and-deliciously-true variety as cuttings/tree and not its seeds, which will take more time, space, and other consumables to be grown and sorted out. Though it is a fun exercise experimenting with seedlings.

Seedlings produced from a persistent caprifig and either (any) type (common or San Pedro or Smyrna) fig result in 25% common, 25% Smyrna, 25% non-persistent caprifig, and 25% persistent caprifig. If a non-persistent caprifig is the male parent, they are 50% Smyrna and 50% non-persistent caprifig.

Depending on your climate, it takes 1 year (season) and up to get a fruit from a seedling.

thanks for the explanation, i live in malaysia, whole year summer. i wont want to waste the time and effort to grow something and end of the day nothing can be harvested and also due to limit of land space.

        thanks again!

Are you saying monkeys are not trustworthy?

No, just something a friend used to say. I don't think it's based in truth. Just watched a great documentary on primates so I have them on the brain. non-human primates seem to be pretty transparent and upfront about their intentions, whether it's about picking who's cool enough to come into the hot springs or if it's about hunting smaller monkey groups.

Whew... You had me worried for a moment there. I had a spider monkey do my taxes last year, I was starting to question whether that was a good idea.
