  • Prusch Park Bourjasotte Grise vs Socorro Black - Please share your experiences

I have been ripening figs from both of these trees the past week and I actually confused myself when I went through the pics and could not figure out which was which because they looked so much the same!! i didn't realize it at the time but I went and picked figs from each tree and compared again and they look and taste almost identical!!!

I thought I may have mislabeled the Socorro Black since I was 100% certain of the Bourjasotte Grise, having collected the cutting myself from the mother tree at Prusch Park. I have Socorro Black from 2 sources and I just ripened the first fig from the second source today and it is also indistinguishable.

What is the history of these 2 figs? When were they found? How did the tree at Prusch originally get there? Why was it called Bourjasotte Grise? Does it match the European counterpart? I have loads of questions but for now, in my climate, these 2 trees appear identical. Leaves, fig size, fig color both outside and inside, ripening date... and I am 100% ok with this because it is an absolutely amazing variety.

Has anyone else seen these striking resemblances or is it the wasp that may have caused them to react so much like one another? I have now had 4-5 figs from each tree and there are minor variances in color from fig to fig but this is true of both varieties with one being darker one day and lighter the next.

I'd be curious to hear fruitnut's take on this.

Just to make it clear, I am in no way suggesting that Fruitnut mislabeled anything. My Socorro Black, from 2 totally different, unrelated sources are identical

Oops, sorry, was not trying to imply that fruitnut mislabeled anything. Simply wanted his thoughts since he grows both of them. Thanks for the clarification, Eric.

Have you seen the initial 2008 discussion on the socorro black and its similarities/differences with bourjasotte grise here:- https://www.houzz.com/discussions/18...find-with-pics

I sure hadn't seen that. I will check it out now. That is from a full decade before I started growing figs. lol

I just read it and it looks like the similarities were noted a full decade ago. Surely, there are others that can chime in with more info on this! They are both excellent figs that everyone needs to have.

The only notable difference I see, is similar to what was noted in the thread above. There appears to be a slightly shorter neck and more bulbous appearance to Socorro Black

According to my records I got them both from Harvey in 2016. I have them planted right next to each other.

The fruit looks similar in Harvey's facebook photos.

My method is take all the cuttings I can. I hardly have any trees managed solely for fruit. Maybe someday soon I'll concentrate just on growing good fruit.

Gotcha. I was just curious because it looks like all new growth minus the main trunk. Looks like you're still getting great production even with all the pruning.

Nice! How old and tall are these?

fruitnut I love using cattle panels for trellises....I've not used them for figs. This has me thinking! I like how close you have the trees. How tall do they get each year?

I have a 2 year old Socorro black, but no figs yet to compare to my Bourjasotte Grise. Maybe now I don't have to make a backup for either one!

The cattle panels are gone. Trunks were getting too big and growing into the panels. These were planted about spring of 2017. So this is their third leaf and they were about 8ft tall both this yr and last.

It has been thought for years that Socorro Black is synonymous with Bourjasotte Grise. Possibly Violet Sepor too.

Learn something new every day in this hobby!! I had no clue. I’m glad I’m not losing it!! 😂

Violet Sepor from Prusch looks quite different. It’s easier and far inferior in my opinion. I had them the same day at Prusch and would never have even thought they could be considered the same.
