  • When do you up-pot your dormant figs?

Even though winter has just started, I'm already feeling the "itch" to do some up-potting of some of my smaller dormant figs.

I have a bunch of figs in 1 qt pots and I was thinking of up-potting them in the next couple weeks.

I want to keep them dormant so the plan is to bring them into the basement, up-pot them and then put them back in winter storage.

Any drawbacks to doing it now? Should I wait a month or two?

I personally don't see any problem with that. I have a few trees I would like to do the same with.

i up-potted some of format trees early last year and they didn't appear to have any issues but I just can't remember how "early". Maybe I should take better notes or just set a time frame for doing it.

Come February 1st, i plant my leek and onion seed. St Patty's day is when I plant tomato seed.

Maybe MLK day is when I up-pot small dormant figs

Its a smart idea as you can get ahead. We will blink and it will be March and you will wonder where the time went and wished you had potted up earlier.
Dry potting mix is a must

That's part of my thinking, Ian. I have time now but come late Feb / early March I'll be getting my veggie seeds going.

I think i did it in February last year. This is just a little earlier.

Part of my problem is where to do it? it's 12F right not outside! I wait till early spring so I can do it outside. When I move them out I will do it. I have no place indoors to make such a mess. Well I could, but it's that much more work for me, no thanks.

Fortunately, I have an unfinished basement with a potting bench that I can do the work.

Although it's in the 50's down there right now, it's much better than the high of 25F outside today.

I bare rooted a few in December, they are now happily growing in front on a east facing window.
I have a Black Mardeira I am going to bare root.Hopefully I will get more growth with a faster draining,
    Less moisture holding potting medium.

i'm probably not going to bare-root my trees, maybe just trim the roots a little and then put in larger pots.

people buy dormant barerooted plants and have no problem potting them... so what you need done should be much safer and very easy.

Hi Members : I am also thinking to up-pot some of my fig trees now (from 2 gal to 5 gal pot) but I found most of them are getting to have some leaves even I keep them in the garage for dormancy. Should I go ahead for now or better to wait in Feb.Outside temperature here in Vancouver, B. C. is a little warmer in these few days between 6 - 9C .

If they are starting to break bud, they shouldd do well with up-potting.

Better to do it now before they fully leaf out.

I wait until month before go outside, just before its first good spring watering when potting mix almost dry. Squeeze pot pull by trunk plop in new pot and water. Or in ground.

Theoretically this is the best time. Up-pot right before roots want to expand.
