  • What if dormant fig pot is over watered?

I have feeling my brother May of overwatered my Figs from 1-8 gallon pot. 35 of them. Normally I give 1 cup water per month and keep soils dry. They have been in climate control garage at dormant temperatures but the soil has been moist for few months now. Obvious I known no to water anymore until is very light and dry but can bigger trees with very large root system rot from tis? Will they die? Is there way to help dry out to normal? Or will be okay because they sleep and no drink much?

    Grazie

I think a water meter would be a good investment to make sure.

Roots staying to wet during dormancy probably will cause root rot.

I checked on my dormant trees in one gallon pots yesterday.
Few of the trees have been in storage for almost two months.
The soil medium was still damp in the pot.
I have not added no water since I put the trees in storage.

Just judging by the weight of them I no think I need meter. Maybe I run fan over them for while to help dry little. Otherwise I guess wait to see

Yes use the fan, compost prevents root rot (numerous studies point this out), if you have any compost add it to the top! I too have not watered all winter. I just checked them today and they are starting to dry out. Maybe in a week I will water.

The compost will help feed it in the spring too. It's OK to add a little compost to containers. I do with all my containers and I have over 40 container plants. I have been growing in containers since 1976. I just love growing all plants! A bad addiction going on 40 years now! ( I have container plants over 35 years old).

If you have a well draining mix I wouldn't worry too much. What I would be a bit concerned about is if the soil was saturated and then the temperature drops to the low 20's or below. One could imagine the soil freezing and harming the roots under such conditions whereas a drier mix (but not too dry) wouldn't harm the roots as much.

The best thing to do with all your over watered dormant figs is to ship them to me. I will take care of them

I had someone watch all of my 150 fig cuttings while I went away for 10 days. They were all the figs I had... when I called to check in on day 5 he said he watered them because they looked like they needed it. (they were all in humidity domes) I almost left early to come back. Lost some of them but saved a lot too. Goodluck my friend!

Well all i know is i left some of my potted trees outside for the whole winter last year ( Too big, don't fit in my basement) and they were fine and grew happily.
And believe me, we get a whole lotta rain in late fall/winter in the Netherlands.
So i think they will be fine.
