I hear a lot about this uc davis. Will they send anyone fig or you have to be a special person? I would like to get some from them as well. Is there a long wait time?Zone 5 Chicago IL Wish list:

Yes, there is a long wait. They only ship once per year and it's too late for this year.SoCal, zone 10.

I believe the deadline for ordering is Sept/Oct/Nov? I've never ordered from them and don't remember. But as it gets later in the year, perhaps those who have ordered from them can help with the process.SoCal, zone 10.

UC Davis doesn't ship cuttings. USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository does and they happen to lease land from UC Davis.Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
Taverna, check out the accessions at http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs...ext+Query&si=0 The ordering deadline last year was November 1. For several years it had been December 1.My fig photos <> My fig cuttings (starts late January) <> My Youtube Videos

What does your son want to do? Being like his daddy?
Just curious… I see many kids that don’t think about a career connected with food production in any way

The USDA employees that send us material would appreciate being recognized for who they are. Sort of like giving a Ford employee credit for your nice new Z06. Davis is easier to remember than UC Davis or, alternatively, Wolfskill.

If I ordered in early December of 2013, after that year's order taking closed, does that mean I might be in on the 2014 delivery and should get ready?RI Zone 6a

Based on last year's shipping, don't get your rooting area ready quite yet. USDA took maybe 3 months between when they started and when they finished shipping last year. Many people did not get cuttings until June. John Preece, the top dog, said they were going to change their ordering system because with the current system that are getting too many people who order multiple times, often ordering the same thing for the same shipping season. My fig photos <> My fig cuttings (starts late January) <> My Youtube Videos

So how does this work anyways? They send you a shipping notice and a few days later you get your choices? Is it first come first serve? Or do they try to divvy up the rare cuttings? Or is it basically magic, and you get what you get and appreciate it because they're doing it as a massive favor?
For future reference, does anyone know their plans for next year? Rumor had it they were shortening the window for ordering significantly, I thought.Brett in Athens, GA zone 7b/8a

To answer my own questions for anyone who is curious...it seems as though it is first come first serve (after bona-fide researchers, who get priority, and for good reason). You get confirmation of shipment followed by a package, and it could take anywhere between a few days and a few months after they start distributing. As for next year, the most their website states is orders must be in by Nov 1st, so I assume they're technically taking orders now for next year, if you have the patience. Someone call me out if I'm wrong. I'm guessing they know in advance which varieties are most popular (maybe their system tallies the requests?), which explains why some (e.g. ischia black) cuttings come as solo cuttings, while others they send three of.Brett in Athens, GA zone 7b/8a

Anyway...last year I tried and failed to place an order by emailing the wrong way, etc., and learned through trial and error how to do it right. Today I got the notification that my shipment is in the mail, so that it exciting, we shall see what the package contains around March 9!Rafael

My Black Madeira story is very complicated. I managed to root one that I bought from Encanto last year, only to realize it was not BM. A generous man who is larger than life sent me cuttings, and now I have one leafed out in humidity chamber. Still waiting for more robust roots before I transplant. If I get BM from UCD I will give them to members here, but it doesn't sound like I will get them based on your package, Johnny.Rafael
