Yeah but how long do your freezes last? And it sounds like you put the insulation on for a short amount of time then take it off. That's why his plants don't rot. There's no month long enclosure. No one from Z8 should be allowed to post in a thread about winter!

I have some nice white ischia i can send you in a one gallon pot. They have been rooted for 6 weeks. Should make the trip ok. If you want one just pay shipping. I have ischia green too if you rather that one.

I wonder if using pipe insulation or pool noodle is different for the south winter climate. Others on here or F4F have reported it rots them out, not allowing the wood to breath, but those were all up north, so just curious. I guess I need to just try it out next year. Building these mesh cages is getting old with more and more figs joining my family. Thanks figpig for the info.

I'm in this boat. I was hoping to put my Nero600m in ground this spring, and was also considering Adriatic JH. I guess maybe Ischia Green is a better replacement for the AJH? VDB or RDB in place of Nero600m?

I'm surprised to see names like Nero600m and JH Adriatic on the list. They're supposed to be reasonably cold hardy, right? Especially the Nero600m. Are they young trees or pretty well established?
(...and geez, if you have trouble with dieback down in Georgia, what hope do we yankees have? ;-)

I have many. I have a special tree that was created by a friend and she patent on it. Its called Dreamsycle One tree makes three different colors. I also have a solid white and a miss chambers. I have the main trunks covered and the made it through 17 degree over night temps. One freeze kills them to ground in a few hours. So i know it works

Just ask but if you ganna let die back why no take dormant cuttings and put mulch or rose styro over top?

I find for my angel trumpets that for the main trunks a put foam pipe insulation on it. Works awsome! For bigger trunks use a pool noodle. Try it. it cant hurt nothing and it will work. I pulled all the leaves off B4 WINTER HIT put insulation on thats it. When we have freezing temps it stays good. And when we have warm weather leaves start to grow again also use it on my smaller fig trees. Give it a try

FWIW, my in-ground LdA dies back to the ground every year and it still produces a delicious crop for me each year. It grows to over 6' tall with multiple branches. I do pinch too, if that matters.
I should also add that I don't add any winter protection at all.

After the last two years of winter die back to the ground, I just made some observations of my
in ground trees. The following fifteen trees have already shown some die back and shriveling
of the tips at the lowest temperature of 25 degrees. In addition to that temperature we have
also had strong winds for extended periods. All eighty of my in ground trees are heavily
mulched with pine straw to about one foot above ground level. This information along with
the fact that some of these trees did not produce edible figs the last two years after complete
die back will weigh a great deal on whether I keep them or replace with hardier trees.
