  • Help needed to ID fig

    Hello
Need help to identify this fig.
Found out now it was purchased at Valoze's greenhouses. Said to have been brought over from Italy 50 years ago.
It is an excellent tasting fig, intense berry taste, chewy skin, very sweet and productive and tolerant to cold.
You may only view thumbnails in this gallery. This gallery has 5 photos.

Even without seeing the leaves I'm pretty sure that's a Violette de Bordeaux. It also makes sense it would get mixed up at Lowes since it's a fig commonly offered at big box nurseries.

Oh I just saw that you DID upload a leaf pic... looks like VdB!

Looks just like my many Hardy Chicago to me or certainly a Mt Etna variety. Do you have both 3 and 5 lobed leaves?

My VdB leaves are more like fingers than the ones in the picture.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments!

          Thanks Npoleskea!
Right on about the fig looking and tasting a lot like VdB! But the leaves do not look similar to other VdBs I have seen. I remember most of the leaves were 5 lobes don't remember any 3 lobe.

          Thanks Fitzski and Brian!
My Hardy Chicago doesn't have the bright tinted stems like this fig and not the same taste. Does your H.C. have red tinted stems? Hope there are not multiple H.C. strains.

          Thanks Fabio!
We do have some figs for sale at h/w stores but I din't buy this fig and it turns out it was bought at a greenhouse not h/w store. (updated original post).

Looks like this fig mystery is mostly solved!

Just got e-mail from the person i got this fig from. Said he remembers now buying this tree at; Valoze's Greenhouses, Albany N.Y
He was told the tree was brought over by the grandfather 50 years ago.

The Valoze website calls this fig "Valoze" and says this fig can still be seen in the main greenhouse. (http://valozesgreenhouse.com/about/)

To complete this fig story need to find out where in Italy this fig came from and what it is named there....to be continued soon.
