  • Potting mix surprise

I was just about to up-pot a few trees today, and found that I was growing something unexpected in my bucket of potting mix. I suspect that it is a benign mold that I can just mix in and ignore. Anyone know for sure? The potting mix is a blend of Miracle Gro orchid mix, MG citrus potting mix, and Espoma Bio-tone starter.

You mix all together and it has been sitting correct.
Same happen to me. Same stuff. Is no big deal. Top scrape it off and spray with stronger hydrogen peroxide mix and add top dress cinnamon. Let dry and mix up. Is is no too much you mix all together save any headache and throw away.

The growth needs to be encouraged and cultivated.
Adding a cover layer of mulch (dry material) can keep the top of containers visibly free of the "unsightly" beneficial fungi.

Its probably the beneficial microbes (Mycorrhizae) in the Espoma Bio-tone.
I've had similar growth in my potting mixes.

      That's from the bio tone.

Good to hear it's probably the bio-tone mycorrhizae. My first reaction when I opened the bucket was to wonder if I needed a hazmat suit or to call in agents Mulder and Scully.

It's no biggie, here are some pots I sowed acorns in. Probably has some plant tone in it, if memory serves.

I had a squirrel that must have done that for me in my lemon tree pot. I just notice the oak tree sprouting leaves last week. haha
